QPP fast facts in 5 minutes - May

Get the help you need to prepare for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Quality Payment Program (QPP) through the Colorado QPP Coalition. The coalition released the second in its series of "QPP Fast Facts in 5 minutes" (below). This series will be published regularly on the coalition webpage,  www.cms.org/coqpp , and in CMS's newsletters.

Here are the questions for May:
  • When will I receive my letter from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) indicating clinician eligibility for the Quality Payment Program?
  • Is there information available that is specific to clinicians that are in small, rural or practices in underserved areas?
  • How do I choose and submit Improvement Activities for the Merit Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) track?
  • How do I register for group reporting using the CMS Web Interface?
  • Is there a Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS ) specific to MIPS?
Read the answers on www.cms.org/coqpp/fast-facts.
2018 Medicare Shared Savings Program: Submit notice of intent to apply by May 31

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is accepting Notices of Intent to Apply (NOIA) for the Jan. 1, 2018, start date. You must submit a NOIA no later than May 31, 2017, at noon ET, if you intend to apply to the Medicare Shared Savings Program, Skilled Nursing Facility 3-Day Rule Waiver, and/or the Medicare Accountable Care Organization Track 1+ Model. A NOIA submission does not bind your organization to submit an application; however, you must submit a NOIA to be eligible to apply in July. See the NOIA Guidance Document and How to Apply webpage for detailed instructions on the NOIA submission process.
8 ways to know if you should participate in the Quality Payment Program

As you've heard, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services  is reviewing claims and letting practices know which clinicians should take part in the  Merit-based Incentive Payment System  (MIPS). MIPS is an important part of the new  Quality Payment Program (QPP)

During this first year as we move to the Quality Payment Program, the federal CMS is committed to working with clinicians to make the reporting and participation process easier. It's CMS' priority to further reduce burdensome requirements so that clinicians can deliver the best possible care to patients.

Lookup Tool to help determine MIPS participation status

Unsure of your participation status in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)? Clinicians can now use an interactive tool on the Quality Payment Program website to determine if they should participate in 2017. To determine your status, enter your National Provider Identifier into the entry field on the tool and find out whether or not you should participate in MIPS this year and where to find resources.

To get the latest information, visit the Quality Payment Program website. Contact the Quality Payment Program Service Center at 866-288-8292 (TTY 877-715- 6222) or QPP@cms.hhs.gov.
Cyber alert: How to protect your practice from hackers

The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) has received multiple reports of 'WannaCry' (also known as 'WannaCrypt') ransomware infections in several countries around the world and in the United States. Some of these infections are impacting patient access to care.  Ransomware  is a type of malicious software that infects a computer and restricts users' access to it until a ransom is paid to unlock it.  Individuals and organizations are discouraged from paying the ransom, as this does not guarantee access will be restored.
