Greetings!
Being creative is living with danger and joy. We risk being wrong, misunderstood, unwelcome. People who expect our works to be beautiful or soothing may find that it's just the opposite. And yet every act of creation can be the occasion for incredible joy -- and many of have a most healthy addiction to the creative process. I love being in this creative space, coaching and encouraging other creatives (or people who think that their creativity has been blocked -- it hasn't).
Giselle
For the past few months, I've been photographing at most of Portland Ballet's rehearsals for Giselle. Even with all my experience photographing modern dance, I'm finding this to be a very new experience, and a wonderful challenge.
While I've not yet decided how to finally present all this work, I am clear that there's a story tell tell about the culture of ballet, the kinds of work that go into a piece, the way form and precision guide ballet dancers in their efforts, and the relevance of classic forms in expressing thoroughly modern ideas.
Shows
My next show will be informal one -- unframed new work from Bates, hanging at "The Bakery on the Hill" (Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine), with an opening on May 4 (First Friday). These are some of the images that will be in that show:

Photographing From Within -- A weekend weekend workshop at Rowe Conference Center in Rowe Mass Here's how the workshop is described in the Rowe catalog. (For more information about Rowe, look at their extensive web site. And if you are ready to register, click here.) Photography can be an act of silent worship, of learning and sharing how Spirit reveals itself in the living world. It can be a act of reverence, or a gesture of self expression. Arthur Fink calls all of these experiences Photographing From Within. This retreat will be a journey beyond the snapshot -- a journey toward taking pictures from within. We will have time for creating pictures and for sharing our work, our process, and our spiritual journeys. Our goal will be to broaden our vision, to open our spiritual awareness, and, as we do this, to learn how to take more expressive pictures. As new images arise, we may (or may not) turn them into photographs. Much of our time will be spent just sharing our process and our discovery, seeing pictures around and within us, but not actually using the camera.
This is NOT a workshop about photographic technique. It's about inward vision and outward expression, about how artistic work helps us both discover and celebrate our spiritual truths. You don't need photographic experience to join this workshop, but you should feel passionate about taking and making pictures, and should have a desire to take risks and grow.
Bring one, or a few, of your pictures that are important to you. They don't need to be what you consider great images or finished work, but they should feel important in some way. Even if you feel that they are failed attempts, they may have great significance for you, could be important for you to share.
Arthur Fink, the photographer of the images in Rowe's Spring/Summer 2012 catalog, is best known for his photographs of dancers, but also runs workshops on photography and spirituality, on photography as journal keeping, and on photographing dance. His work can be seen atwww.ArthurFinkPhoto.com. In describing his dance photography, Arthur writes: "Being in the studio as dances are created, or even as dancers prepare themselves, feels like being in a delivery room as children are being born. Amidst pain or anguish, tempered with rhythm and support, and bolstered with faith, new life emerges. It's physical, sometimes sensual, often spiritual. Too often this process is ignored, as image makers look only at the final result - the dance." He also offers consulting to nonprofit organizations on mission, focus, structure, and vision; coaching on creativity and communication; and assistance to businesses and other organizations to help make technology simple and easy to use. "Nurturing the soft side of technology" is how he describes this. Throughout it all, he asks questions. |

Seeing Dance like a photographer
I've been running workshops on the visual (not technical) aspects of dance photography, that I'd love to bring to your school, your university program, your studio, your dance event. Here's how Katherine Ferrier described my workshop for the Cultivate Festival that she organized in Bethlehem NH.
Do come by my studio / gallery. I'm at 145 Newbury Street (just off India Street) in Portland Maine. E-mail or call (207.615.5722) to make sure I'll be there, but do visit. |
Best regards,
Arthur Fink
