Co-President's Corner
Welcome back from Spring Break! As the school year begins to wind down, we enter into an especially busy time of year. While sports and activities are in full swing, the school year is not over quite yet, and the PTO has several upcoming events to bring to your attention. Remember to mark your calendars! But we also don't want to forget to thank Anne Thomas, Erin Kirn & Caroline Bailey for chairing an awesome Books, Bingo & Bake Sale; Sandi Duchen & Erin Kirn for a successful Scholastic Book Fair & Lesley McGee for hosting our March Campus Beautification Day.

PTO GENERAL MEETING/TRANSITION NIGHT: The final General PTO meeting of the year will be held on Thursday, April 13, at 6:00 pm in the Cafeteria. The Livsey Board members will fill you in on many exciting things happening at Livsey and the general membership will vote to install the new slate of 2017-2018 PTO Officers. Following the PTO meeting there will be 2 half-hour Transition Night sessions where you can find out what's in store for your child in their next grade level.

LIVSEY COLOR 5K: Livsey's first ever 5K Color Run will be Saturday April 22nd at 8:30AM. Same day registration (no t-shirt or color packets available day of) will begin at 7:30 and the whole event, including the "after party" will wrap up by 12:30PM. Come bring the whole family to run or walk and get colored!  We have extended the deadline for the paper registration to Monday, April 10th - you will not receive a shirt after this date, but you can still come and join the fun the day of the event.

FAMILY NIGHT OUT (FNO): The PTO will host a Family Night Out event on April 25th at the Chick-fil-A at Tucker Station from 6-8pm. Come out and socialize, dine, and support a local restaurant. A percentage of sales from Livsey families will be donated back to our school.

TEACHER APPRECIATION: Our annual Teacher Appreciation Week is also right around the corner. This is a week full of treats and events honoring our dedicated staff. Please look for more information to come home from Kate Ward, Teacher Appreciation Chair, in the coming weeks. Volunteers will be needed to help with events and prep work as well as provide food and supplies the week of May 1st-5th. Please volunteer to help support our wonderful teachers and staff by showing them your appreciation.

FIELD DAY:
Field Day is on Friday, May 12th and the Field Day Committee needs your help to ensure that the games and activities have proper adult supervision. Please be on the lookout for a separate email with a signupgenius link for Field Day volunteers.

1st DAY SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Finally, please remember to order your child/children's school supplies for next year through 1st Day School Supplies before June 15th. We are only accepting online orders HERE, and there will be a very limited supply of extra kits in the Fall. Pre-ordered kits will be waiting for you at the 2017 Livsey Open House.

In looking ahead to next year, the PTO still needs volunteers to either chair next year's various committees or be a part of a committee. We start planning and budgeting for many events over the summer. If you'd like to volunteer to serve on or chair a committee, please contact us, and we'll help find a spot for you. Specifically, we are in need in the following areas:

* Fall Festival - Silent Auction & Table of Treasurers - 2 Co-Chairs needed
* School Dance - 1 Chair needed

Descriptions on these committees can be found on our website HERE. Thank you in advance for your time and continued support!

Principal's Notes
Student Attendance..........

SCHOOL SUCCESS BEGINS WITH ATTENDANCE! When it comes to school, students who miss school...miss out. Attendance boosts student achievement and improves the quality of your child's educational experience. Our Attendance Incentive Program for the 2016-2017 school year is geared toward decreasing the number of students with 6 or more absences by 5% from the previous school year. Last school year, 34.4% of our students missed 6 or more days of school. Presently, 27% of our students have missed 6 or more days of school. I am pleased to report that student attendance improved slightly as month.

With our current percentage being 27, this means that if only 2.2% more of our students miss 6 or more days, Livsey will not meet our goal (this is approximately 8 students). We are Livsey and can exceed this improvement goal. Let's all work together to reduce student absences and tardies.

The Georgia Milestones Assessment..........

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System (Georgia Milestones) is a comprehensive summative assessment program for students in grades 3, 4, and 5 in the elementary school setting. Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. This year students in grades 3 through 5 take an end-of-grade assessment in English Language Arts and mathematics while students in grade 5 are also assessed in science and social studies. Livsey students will take the Georgia Milestones during the April 18-May 3 testing window. Additional information related to the Georgia Milestones can be found at http://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instruction-and-Assessment/Assessment/Pages/Georgia-Milestones-Assessment-System.aspx

Science Olympiad...................

Livsey School students represented well at the DeKalb County Science Olympiad competition which took place on March 18, 2017. Thirty students competed in 25 events and the students below received medals:

Paper Rockets - 3rd place to Otto Wiese and Patrick Sanderson
Pentathlon - 1st place to Seyoum Gebrehiwot, Daniel Ong, Pierce Chambers, Patrick Sanderson, and Otto Wiese
Simple Machines -1st place to Luke Friedman and Vincent Bryant
Wildlife Safari - 3rd Place to Isabel Updike-Jones and Samantha Kirn

Additionally, based on our points for the entire DeKalb County Science Olympiad competition, Livsey will be headed to compete in the Elementary State Science Olympiad at Kennesaw State University on May 13, 2017. We are really proud of the accomplishments of all the students and parent coaches on the team.

Cross Country............

The return of winter weather delayed our start just a bit but we had a great first meeting last week! We implemented a new lap-counting system and the students were very patient while we worked out all the kinks. Thanks to this new system, I can tell you we have already covered over 150 miles as a Cross Country Club! That is tremendous! We will meet every Wednesday through May 5th. Please remember to send a water bottle with your child.

We would also like to encourage all Livsey families to run with us in the first ever Livsey Color Run 5K on Saturday, April 22nd. We are going to have a great time!

School Council........................

It is time for School Council Elections. For next school year, we have two vacant positions. For those two vacancies, we have 3 nominations. Yaritza Moreno, Mandy Smith, and Kathryn Stephens have been nominated to serve on the Livsey School Council (names are listed in alphabetical order). Voting will take place from 7 am to 8 pm on Thursday, April 13, 2017.

Camp Invention..........

Camp Invention is coming to Livsey School hosted at Tucker High School! Take fun to the next level with Invention Project, a one-of-a-kind program for 6th through 9th grade students. We're calling on young innovators to team up, turn heads, and take on the challenge. Livsey School is proud to host Invention Project during the week of [Start Date] in partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Simone Kelly will serve as Director and lead innovators during a unique week like no other!

Students will discover what it takes to be an entrepreneur while exploring circuitry, energy, bio-engineering, and economics to create smart gear, program a mini robot, and prototype lifesaving technology. They'll use these new skills to research, pitch, and invest in a product while learning alongside fellow creative thinkers!

Although the business deals are simulated, the skills, the friendships, and the fun are all real. It all takes place in an environment that inspires and supports individuality. When Invention Project comes to an end, innovators won't have a patent - yet - but they'll have the skills and confidence to make anything possible in the future. The total cost of the program is $225. Availability is limited, so visit www.invent.org/inspire or call 800.968.4332 to secure a spot today!

SPOTLight on Community

Hi, we are Anthony and Jennifer Tiberia, and we came to partner with Livsey in 2011. We own Sprig Restaurant. Our favorite movie is Chef, and I like to eat Italian food like my grandmother use to make. Do you know that for fun I like to cook and spend time with our two boys Nicolas and Gianlucca? We also enjoy travelling to Italy! My favorite thing about partnering with Livsey is the satisfaction of helping a neighborhood school. I can't wait until Summer; did we mention that we also love the beach! I would like to see Livsey continue to enrich and build the young minds of all the kids that will run our country in the future.

SPOTLight on Livsey
Mr. Smalls

Hi, I'm Mr. Smalls and I came to work at Livsey in 2015.
I work as a Head Custodian.
My favorite book is 48 Laws of Power.
And I like to eat Italian food.
Do you know that for fun I love to travel and hang out with family and friends?
I also enjoy Creating Music, watching football and Cooking.
My favorite thing about Livsey is the aura of the students, the loving support from the faculty and staff members and also last but not least, the wonderful PTO members.
I can't wait till the day I see our kids grow up and become a success.
I would like to see our school be recognized for its dedication and hard work from the teachers, staff, PTO members, and students.

   Suzie Lutz
Hello, I am Suzie Lutz and I have two children currently at Livsey. Leslie is in 3rd grade and Alexis is in kindergarten. My oldest, Ben, is a Livsey graduate and currently attends Tucker Middle School. I grew up in D.C. before moving to Atlanta to attend Emory University. I married into the Livsey family as my husband, Jason, is a Livsey graduate. After graduate school, Jason and I moved back to Tucker to be a part of the Livsey community as we started our family.
I have been working part-time as a preschool teacher for the past 5 years, first at St. Bede's Day School and now at Embry Hills Kindergarten and Preschool. I love teaching little ones and fostering their love of learning. They are so much fun and so sweet! I also assist older students in math and science as a tutor. I have tutored on and off for years mainly helping with calculus and statistics.
I have loved being a part of the Livsey family for the past 8 years and appreciate its strength and support as I have watched my children flourish in school. To do my part to help, I have been a room parent many times over the years, chaperoned lots of fun field trips, and helped out with many of the wonderful events that occur each year. This past year I have been helping out with the Spirit Wear committee. I have worked with so many amazing people and have really enjoyed getting to know everyone who makes our Livsey family so incredible!
