Local authors Jessie Biele and Michael Bohn share vintage images
Mount Vernon Revisited, by Jessie Biele and Michael Bohn is part of Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series of local history books. Through 215 photographs, paintings, and maps, the book surveys the 340-year arc of history of the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County, a locale that is as interesting and varied as any in the country.
The book highlights the evolution of the Mount Vernon Estate and delves into the history of many local landmarks and events. Subjects include the economic rejuvenation of the area by a group of Quaker families in the mid-1800s, the Civil War, the coming of the trolley, Woodlawn Plantation, Gum Springs, Pohick Church, Gunston Hall, two World Wars, Fort Belvoir, the Mount Vernon Parkway, Fort Hunt, and the suburban explosion of the 1950s and 1960s. Mount Vernon Revisited captures all of these landmarks and events in an effort to preserve the area's history for generations to come. Available now.

Local nonprofit at the heart of community
Many organizations rely on strong signage, visibility and a team of savvy marketing strategists to bolster awareness in a competitive environment. United Community Ministries (UCM), a successful and well-established nonprofit in southeast Fairfax, takes a slightly different approach to achieve amazing results.
Located at 7511 Fordson Road, UCM is headquartered in a former U.S. post office. There is no signage fronting Richmond Highway. However, when your organization has served as an active, grassroots advocate for the community since 1969, people know where to find you.
"We meet unmet needs in the community," said Executive Director Shirley Marshall. "We have 79 staff members and 700 volunteers annually, and through their connections and word of mouth, people in need of services discover what UCM has to offer."
Most people find out about UCM through pure and simple grassroots advertising. Even so, UCM recognizes there are always more people to reach, both those in need of services and also those interested in donating their time, treasure and talent.
"You can drive up the GW Parkway and never know there are poor people in your area," said Marshall. To increase brand awareness beyond the immediate community, UCM recently revamped their logo, will add signage to their delivery trucks, and will roll out a new web design in the near future. UCM also uses social media and promotional videos to supplement their word of mouth strategy and to create more "share-able" opportunities within online communities.
SFDC: What is one thing you want people to know about UCM?
Marshall: "People CAN make a difference. Many people are quick to say that problems are too big, but one-by-one we can change the world."
UCM assists low-income individuals and families in the Route 1 corridor by providing services that help members of the community become more self-sufficient. These services and programs include emergency assistance, employment placement and training, developmental childcare, supportive housing services, homelessness prevention, child abuse and neglect prevention, and in-kind gifts of food, clothing, furniture, household goods and infant supplies.
