Wow! I can’t believe we have already come to the end of the school year. This week was another active one at Lomond and I have many people to thank:
Field Day is taking place today, Friday, June 1
st
. I would like to thank Mr. Wagner and all of our specials teachers: Ms. Bihuniak, Ms. Durkalski, Ms. Ely, Ms. Steiner and Ms. Wang for organizing and executing another fun experience for our students. I also appreciate our many parent volunteers who helped out.
While we only have two days of school left, they will be busy ones:
- Clap Out: This is a Shaker tradition for our 4th grade students who will leave Lomond and go on to Woodbury next year. This event, scheduled for Monday, June 4th at 2:30 p.m., takes place outdoors (weather permitting) in front of the school. It is a casual graduation ceremony in which all the students in grades K-3 form a human tunnel through which our 4th grade students pass. The 4th graders then come out through the front door where their names are called, alphabetically by class (in the following order: DiPiero, Grahl, Hammer, Malone). The students cross a bridge and shake hands with me and Ms. McCauley. I hope all parents of 4th grade students can attend this ceremony next Thursday.
- Flag Lowering: This ceremony marks the end of our school year. It will take place on thelast day of school, Tuesday, June 5th at 2:45 p.m. Flag Lowering is especially poignant this year as we are saying good-bye to some very special staff members, whom we will honor at this ceremony:
- Mr. Henry, our IB Coordinator and Enrichment teacher, is retiring this year.
- Ms. Lucci, beloved Skills Teacher, will retire this year as well.
Both of these staff members have been at Lomond for many years and are an integral part of our community. We will miss them very much.
It has been an amazing year of growth for our students. I thank you all for your support and I wish you a wonderful, relaxing summer. Please encourage your students to read and practice math facts over summer break. I look forward to seeing our students return in August!

Parent Input to Class Placement Form
|
|
In a few short weeks, principals and teachers will begin the process of planning classes for the next school year. This process involves a review of student information by the instructional staff. It also includes an overview of each student’s reading and math performance, academic strengths and weaknesses, a discussion of special learning needs, as well as social and emotional maturity. We feel this is very important in helping each child achieve academic success.
We welcome your input if you feel there is additional information that needs to be considered in this process. If you would like to provide insights regarding your child, please complete the placement form that is attached
HERE
,
posted on the school’s website or available in the office. Our goal is to provide all parents with an opportunity to share information regarding their child’s interests, learning style and personality.
If you choose to provide additional information, please return the placement form by Friday, June 1
st
to the school office. While we value your insights, we ask that you
refrain
from requesting a specific teacher or placement with specific peers. Please understand that such requests make it difficult to meet the needs of every student.
Thank you.

Summer Construction Projects at the District
|
|
There are several construction projects at our schools from June 7-August 3. Please be aware that there will be limited parking at the schools while the construction workers are on site.
For safety reasons, there will be no access to the playground at Onaway during the replacement of the asphalt play area and a retaining wall. As an alternative, we suggest families use the play areas at Boulevard or Woodbury.
Please note that the projected time frame for all projects is subject to change due to weather and other variables. The typical work day for operation of heavy equipment will be approximately 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work on asphalt replacement could extend to 6-7 p.m.
We expect congestion in and around the High School Oval as the following parking lots will be closed for the summer construction period:
- High School south parking lot
- High School north parking lot
- Onaway Elementary School parking lot
Please plan accordingly if you’ll be visiting or picking up/dropping off students at the High School or Onaway. We suggest budgeting an extra 10 minutes for walking from your car to a building. The Administration Building lot will be restricted to building users only.
During the construction period, the SELF and Shaker Heights City Summer Recreation Programs will run according to schedule in the respective buildings. Walk-in routes to the buildings will be identified. Participants and employees should plan accordingly to gain access to the buildings.
Contact the Shaker Heights Schools Business Office with any questions, 216-295-1400. Review this
full list
of construction projects.
