Welcome to Fall's JFS Elder Care Solutions newsletter!

JFS Elder Care Managers understand the challenges of growing older.  This newsletter explores issues families face when unexpected changes in physical or mental health impact a loved one's ability to live on their own.

In this article, Elder Care expert Malka Young discusses things to think about when you are caring for a loved one who lives out of state.

Live Better, Longer with JFS Elder Care Solutions.

Are You Managing the Care of Aging Parents Long Distance?
You Don't Have to Do It Alone.

My elderly parents are in their 80s and live in Florida.  Over the past year, their health has deteriorated. They call me every day and I dread the late night phone calls.  I have to drop everything at work, fly out on the next flight and leave my family on their own. Between the expense, the worry and stress, I am at my limit.
Please help!

JFS Care Managers get calls from family caregivers trying to keep up with the demands and needs of aging parents who live far away.  The challenges of aging are difficult enough when parents are close by, but when miles are between you and your loved ones, being the one they call can not only be burdensome but can also put your parents at increased risk if you cannot be readily available to help and make decisions.

Just imagine...
  • You hear on the news that Governor Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency and has ordered mandatory evacuation in anticipation of a hurricane and your parents have decided to shelter in place.
  • You get a call from your father's neighbor who says that she found him sitting in her living room, thinking he was in his own home.  During your weekly call, everything seemed fine, but now...
  • Your frail mother calls to tell you that your father fell, (again) and she is driving him to the emergency room.
You are hours away.  Do you drop everything, leave work early and buy an expensive,  last minute airline ticket so you can be there?  Or, is there a better solution?

You don't have to do it all alone.

When your parents are far away, JFS can offer peace of mind when deciding what to do.

Sometimes frail older adults need practical help arranging for services, and sometimes adult children just want to be sure that mom or dad are safe.  With JFS Elder Care Solutions, you have immediate access to comprehensive care management services designed to fit your needs.

Would your parent be better off closer to you and other family members? Can they afford assisted living?

Our experienced care managers can share housing options, make sure you know the right questions to ask when helping your parents choose the Medicare supplemental insurance to make sure they are covered in both Florida and Massachusetts, or help you and your parents think about their choices before the next crisis happens.

Don't go it alone.  Contact JFS Elder Care Solutions today to talk about how an experienced care manager can give you peace of mind when your parents live far away.

And if you live outside of Massachusetts, and your parents live here, JFS Elder Care Solutions can monitor their care.
