Renowned High Country photographer
Todd Bush in the sky

Todd explains how he came to be in the sky:

"Something rather rare and lovely occurred this morning that I have never witnessed before: A 'Glory' from Sugar Mountain, NC

Just after sunrise this past Saturday from atop mile-high Sugar Mountain, a mini-round rainbow would briefly appear as the fast moving clouds rolling over the mountain parted around the sun, remaining on the valley enshrouded below.

This allowed the sun to project the mountain and my shadow onto the clouds with the added coolness surrounded by a mini rainbow, more accurately a 'Ringed Glory & Brocken Spectre Shadow.'"

More about ..... The Brocken Spectre was observed and first described by theologian and natural scientist Johann Silberschlag in 1780. Since then, several records of the phenomenon have been kept in regional literature about the Brocken.

But the phenomenon is by no means restricted to Germany; Brocken Spectres have also been observed at many moutainous regions around the world like Maui's Haleakalā National Park, the Cairngorms in Scotland, and the Lake District, UK.

Jane Stephenson, Founder & Author

THIS SATURDAY - The United Methodist Women's group gives a luncheon each year as a kick-off for the New Opportunity School @ Lees-McRae College, which has a three week session in July. This year we are pleased to host Jane Stephenson, renowned founder of this school which now has three sites in Appalachia (including the original in Beria, KY and the latest in West VA).

Jane will show a video, give a talk with questions, sign her newest book and also Karen Sabo, local campus Director, will be there. A light luncheon will be served after. The date is Sat. June 8 and the program begins at 10am in the Banner Elk United Methodist Church. We would love it if you could publicize this, as all are welcome to hear about this program which lifts so many women and their families out of poverty through education and intensive, personalized individual assessment, development and internship in our community of Banner Elk.
