SugarBrew on Sugar Mountain
A Great Brewing
Of Sugar, uh, Beer!
A Fabulous
Mountain Festival
a 5,300 feet.
Photos and captions by Ron Johnson
Folks sampled an array of craft, import and domestic beer, wines and spirits, listened to live music performances by local favorites and satisfied appetite with a selection of good 'ole American style summer-time food. Hot dogs, hamburgers, sodas, and ice cream did not disappoint. They also enjoyed ski-lift rides to Sugar's 5,300 ft. peak and a cool mountain temperature (74) and fresh mountain air.

To say that SugarBrew is colorful is an understatement

but they certainly added to the festivities.

Someone had to do it!
From 1pm until 5pm local celebrity personalities powered through fifty-nine craft brews in six categories to determine this year's winners.

The contest was held in the mix of the festival where passers-by could
observe the fun and grueling task of judging. Entries were judged on
appearance, smell, taste, after taste, and drinkability.

Judge Ken Ketchie, second from left, publisher of High Country Magazine, was right on deadline for his current issue and there is some concern about typo's.

Lees-McRae College appoints
Kelly Collins as Director of
Career Services

Lees-McRae College is proud to announce the appointment of Kelly Collins as Director of Career Services. Collins, who most recently served as an adjunct microbiology professor for Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, began her duties on July 28.

Having earned her bachelor's degree in Biology from Bethany College in West Virginia and her doctorate in Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Ohio,

Collins has spent more than ten years in the higher education marketplace. While pursuing her PhD, Collins participated in multiple career development programs that will serve her well in her new position.

"I went to a small school very similar to Lees-McRae in northern West Virginia," said Collins. "Although I received a wonderful, multifaceted education from Bethany College, I feel as though I could have benefited greatly from a central career services office that provided individualized career preparation guidance to students. I am very excited to work with our dynamic faculty and student population to fulfill that same need at Lees-McRae."

As the Director of Career Services, Collins will oversee the planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of career services programs that focus on student needs.

She will work with academic divisions to conduct programs and bring in speakers to meet the specific career needs of students; develop, implement and evaluate campus wide career programs; bring business representatives to campus to meet with and interview students; and maintain and publicize internship opportunities.

"Upon graduation, our students leave us for varied careers and graduate school education," said Blaine Hansen, vice president of strategic planning and effectiveness. "Kelly Collins is uniquely positioned to help students prepare for these future goals and we are delighted to welcome her to Lees-McRae."

With the opening of the Robb Center for Career Exploration slated for early fall 2014, Collins will be able to introduce students to this new central space for career and life planning resources. Renovations to the historic stone cottage were made possible by a generous donation from friend of the College, Dick Robb, Trustee Dell Williamson, and wife, Barbara. The Robb Center provides a wide array of career preparation activities and events, including career counseling, career seminars, rsum workshops, mock interviews, and internships and job networking.

Through the Center, students have access to the College Central Network with 27,000 internship and 500,000 job listings. Students can also take advantage of self-assessment and research tools through Focus2 Career & Education Planning software.

For more information about career services at Lees-McRae, please contact Kelly Collins at collinsk@lmc.edu or call 828-898-5241.
