Member of "The Lost Boys" of the Sudan to speak at Peace Conference

Michael Ayuen de Kuany, one of "The Lost Boys" of the Sudan and the founder of Rebuild Sudan, will be a featured speaker at the 2011 Lake Junaluska Peace Conference, which focuses on "Poverty, Abundance, and Peace: Seeking Economic Justice for all God's Children." Born in 1980 in what was then southern Sudan, Kuany fled his village during an attack by the government forces in 1987. Walking the Faith: Singing Songs of Faith, Hope and Love  

Since 1986, local choir singers, directors, and accompanists have gathered at Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center to celebrate God's gift of music and worship together. From the time of its inception through the present, the focus of Choir Music Weekend (CMW) at Lake Junaluska has been on encouraging the small to medium sized choir.  At the final worship service on Sunday morning, the eight anthems learned during the mass rehearsals will be sung together, illustrating the them of the 2011 weekend: Caring for Creation.  READ MORE 

 

 

2011 Evans Lecture Series with Dr. Howard Zehr

Cross at SunsetProfessor Howard Zehr, a founder of the Restorative Justice Movement, will explore the concept of restorative justice at the Chautauqua Lecture Series at Lake Junaluska.

 

Professor Howard Zehr, a founder of the Restorative Justice Movement, will give a free public lecture on "The Promise and Challenge of Restorative Justice" at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 30 at Shackford Hall, Lake Junaluska. On Saturday, October 1, Professor Zehr will lead lectures and workshops.

Trail of Hope: The Power of Native American Women
October 7-9, 2011 

SEJANAMSEJANAM, the Southeastern Jurisdictional Association for Native American Ministries, and Lake Junaluska will be hosting the second Native American Women's Gathering and Conference. "The Trail of Hope: The Power of Native American Women" will focus on capacity building, sharing strategies, and tapping into the leadership capabilities of Native American Women to strengthen their communities and churches.   READ MORE 

 

African-American Music and Worship Explo

November 10-12  

Lake Junaluska will host the "Til the Power of the Lord Comes Down!" Music and Worship in the African-American Church Explo. Leading this Music and Worship Explo is Robert McMichael, minister of music at Mt. Bethel/St. Phillip UMC in Marietta, Georgia. McMichael is well-known for his musical work throughout The United Methodist Church and especially within the African-American church community, having played at national gatherings for years. Along with him will beJarvis Wilson, also known throughout the church for his extraordinary and almost unbelievable gifts at the keyboard. Other gifted leaders will join them during the Explo who also come from backgrounds and ministries where they have used their musical gifts to help build up and revitalize vibrant worship services and music ministries in their respective churches. Pastors, music directors, musicians, and choirs should all come to see what happens when you join together to learn new and exciting ways to help "Sing til the Power of the Lord Comes Down!"  READ MORE
