Slow Food is a non-profit member supported International movement, founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people's dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. |

In an effort to continue to support appropriate regional causes, the Slow Food Philly chapter uses funds that we generate at events for donations. Our website contains a page with a running tally of contributions and the organizations that benefit.
Our first partnership involves us working with Les Dames d'Escoffier Philadelphia to jointly raise $2000 dollars for a student scholarship internship at Pennypack Farm, awarded to Robin Kerber. The proceeds from our next few events will be applied to the scholarship until we reach our goal.
This newsletter also has several other events below that are being sponsored by our partners and we hope that you can find time to attend or support their activities. We thank you for your interest and support!

Location: The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College
Cost: $20 in advance, $25 at the door (cash only)

The Berley brothers, usually dressed in 20th century style suits, have recreated an "old fashioned" ice cream saloon at Franklin Fountain and resurrected Shane Confectionary, a Philadelphia fixture since 1863. They were the featured on the cover of December's Grid Magazine. They have designed a presentation and tasting especially for us Slow Foodies. They will discuss their recipe development philosophy, local product sourcing and values for a people-centered experience. They are true entrepreneurs with a sense of aesthetic and style. We really want to pack the house so please come out and take a trip through time and taste slow sweets.

Arranged by one of our long standing members and in collaboration with Farm to City and The Rotunda we have been able to arrange a free showing (sorry no reserved seating so first come).
Trailer: http://www.eatingalabama.com/about/ Movie Synopsis: In search of a simpler life, a young couple returns home to Alabama where they set out to eat the way their grandparents did - locally and seasonally. But as they navigate the agro-industrial gastronomical complex, they soon realize that nearly everything about the food system has changed since farmers once populated their family histories. A thoughtful and often funny essay on community, the South and sustainability, "Eating Alabama" is a story about why food matters. |
