Dear GISH PICKS reader:

It's been a trying week in our country's history. You would have normally received my blog with my recommendations of weekend PICKS by now, but I was visiting the folks in Charlottesville as I drove south on my way home from my annual IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project (www.IgniteYourOwnLife.com) road trip. I connected with that community by sitting with them in their pain. We became friends, shared prayers and stories, laughed, cried, sang songs. And I walked a labyrinth, a very healing thing indeed. The photo above sums up all the good that's happening there right now, people loving on each other. C'ville had a horrific weekend but they are not defeated. It's the opposite: they are STRONGER than ever.

To see the stories as well as the documentation of my road trip, click here. If you'd like to learn more about the IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project and/or donate, please click here. Donations would be gratefully appreciated since my road trips are always done on a wing and a prayer!

After hearing many stories of the invasive neo-Nazi rally, I was wiped out. I apologize that I couldn't give you my event suggestions this week! I am sure you understand. I'll be back next week with plenty of ideas. Also, be sure to tune in on August 25 for a special PICKS ON WHEELS, my weekly Facebook Live event on Fridays from 12-12:30pm that I broadcast here . I'll be chatting with "Mister McKinney" about his historic Houston tours and Houston's birthday celebration (our city was founded on August 30, 1836).

It is always my goal to ignite lives and create connections which is why I share information about culture for kids and adults and about day camps for children. People who are ignited and connected choose love over hate. It's my way of changing the world. That's more important now than ever.

I hope that you will join me in doing whatever you can to stop the spread of hate and fear. Let's be Americans who are kind to each other!
