The Blessing
Rector's Reflections
Love or Money?

A rich landowner tells his unsatisfactory manager he's going to fire him. We don't know how long the employee had to clear his desk, but apparently it was long enough to win friends and influence the people who had accounts with his boss. The manager called them in and reduced their debt. When the boss heard about it, for some reason he didn't call his lawyer but sat back and laughed in admiration.
How could Jesus tell a story where the main character is a crook? Why did the boss commend the bad manager? What is Jesus trying to tell us? This parable can be difficult for us to interpret. One possibility: Dr. Audrey West, in a 2004 Bible study, described a parable as a story about something ordinary, with a surprise or twist that leads us to experience reality in a new way, so that it may even transform our daily living. The surprise in this parable is not the manager's self-serving behavior, as we've seen for ourselves in some corporate accounting scandals in the news. The surprise is the boss showing mercy.
Does this boss remind you of someone? Maybe the landowner in another parable who pays a full day's wage to farm workers who spent barely one hour in the vineyard? The father running out to welcome a shamed and destitute, long-lost son? Or someone who's been in the news lately? Is there any way that he reminds you of God?
In God's economy, people matter more than profits. The prophet (first reading), the psalmist, and Jesus, telling the parable, agree on this. The epistle writer adds a prayer for "a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity" for everyone, boss and beggar alike. [Sundays and Seasons, 2016]
I invite you to read the texts before worship to help answer the question: love or money? Our readings for Sunday include: Amos 8:47 - Warnings to those who trample on the needy and poor, Psalm 113 - The Lord lifts up the poor from the ashes. 1 Timothy 2:1-7 - One God, one mediator-Christ Jesus-who gave himself for all people, and Luke 16:1-13 - A shrewd manager: faithful in little, faithful in much; serving God/wealth. See you in worship!

Blessings+
Bill
P.S. "Mass on the Grass" One Service at 9:00 am Next Sunday, September 25th. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring a lawn chair or blanket as we gather in the courtyard for worship.
Solar Array is Blessed
Last Sunday Bishop Hirschfeld visited All Saints. He was the celebrant at both the 8 & 10 am services. Bishop Hirschfeld met with the congregation for Q&A between services and after the second service he was lifted up to the roof on a special lift, operated by Anne Hunt, to bless the new solar panels. You will not want to miss the 3-minute slide show with two video clips of Bishop Hirschfeld being lifted to the "heavens".
This was an important day in the life of our church, and you can see it if you click on the website and then click on Start Slideshow.
The music chosen for the video is a Shaker hymn titled, Lord of the Dance.  This hymn was performed by our choir as the communion hymn at the 10 am service.

Sincerely,
Phil Wasmuth

The Rt. Reverend A. Robert Hirschfeld, Celebrant at All Saints and blessing of the solar panels:
All Saints Receives Grant
Grant Awarded to All Saints'
The Five Practices of the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire contains this statement: "Living on this planet earth, our island home, we seek to protect and care for water, soil, air, and the whole web of Life in which we are connected to every being." Project grants, administered by the Standing Committee, are being made available to support our care of creation by reducing environmental impact and increasing sustainability. This week the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Church in New Hampshire approved our grant request for $20,000 to support our stewardship of the earth initiatives contained in our capital campaign project.
Options for Helping Refugees
Currently, there is a record number of refugees in the world. There are families fleeing violence and young children crossing the border into the US alone. Some legal, thoroughly-vetted refugee families are coming to NH to settle. While most refugees are in other parts of the world and few, if any, of those coming to NH will be living in Wolfeboro, there are likely ways that we can help, beyond contributing funds to refugee relief organizations. Please let Warren Muir know if you are interested in exploring options for our community, our parish, or yourself to be involved in helping those displaced from their homes. He will be at the Mission Outreach Fair with information about the Governor Wentworth Area Volunteer Co-op or can be reached at [email protected] or 202-495-1128.
Opportunities Still Available
If you were worried you missed your chance to become editor or co-editor of the eNews, worry not! True Saint Jeannie Muir has graciously offered to be part of the team but prefers to get more of the tech-side of the job under her belt and therefore is unable to take over duties at this time. Please contact Pastor Bill if you are interested in this mission. (Remember? PJs. Wine. Netflix reruns... It's a dream job!)

Thanks,
Phoebe VanScoy-Giessler

Drivers Needed
If anyone can help with driving Larry to Radiation therapy at Douglas Wentworth between now and October 21st, please contact Jane at [email protected] for any appointment dates and times. She is very grateful for your help.
Donations to Louisiana Flood Victims
At their August meeting, Vestry members approved the recommendation of the Mission/Outreach Team to donate $1,000 to flood victims in Louisiana. The donation will be channeled through ERD, Episcopal Relief & Development. The monies will be spent in the most needy areas as soon as possible.

The devastation in Louisiana is overwhelming. This is an opportunity for All Sainters to make a difference and help ERD bring much-needed supplies and compassionate support to people in the Gulf Coast. Please go to  www.episcopalrelief.org for information if your wish to make a personal donation. Or you may mail a check to:

Our Mission/Outreach Team is committed to using the Mission Fund to reach out to local, national, international and Sustainability for the Future causes. We appreciate your support and ask that you join us in Spreading the Word through sharing our Time, Talent and Treasure.

Fair Chair 2017 Search
A committee of recent summer fair chairs is searching for summer fair leaders for 2017. The leaders do not need to be spouses, or even close friends. The fair chairs have met and talked about the terrific experiences that each experienced. Some of the experiences were transformative. Over the next several weeks we'll publish in the eNews statements from past fair chairs.

This week Christy Parker relates experiences from 2012, when she and Bob chaired the fair.

Please give leading the fair prayerful consideration. Past fair chairs have pledged to be with the leaders on this journey, and will provide help and guidance each step of the journey.

Sincerely,
Phil Wasmuth
Summer Fair Co-chairs selection committee

Christy and Bob meeting with Booth Chairmen. When approached by our settle pastor Randy Dales for Bob and me to take on a two-year commitment to help by taking on what seemed at the time like a daunting task I put my response on pause while mulling over the repercussions.  Actually, my main concern was that in the summers I worked and thought that in having two sizable responsibilities my effectiveness would be diluted.  We told Randy that we would pitch in and try to do an admirable job.  My willingness to say yes rested heavily on the fact that Bob Parker is an honor bound dutiful efficient responsible kind of person who would take up the slack in fulfilling the obligations that go hand in hand with corralling the forces, cranking the machinery, and taking care of the incoming and outgoing offerings of donations.  That is truly what happened.  Bob lifted the yolk and bore most of the weight as the responsibilities received a check of completion.
If I don't reveal what I am about to tell you then you will not have the full story.  During our first year, Tom and Donna Cote were the actual chairs if the fair, while Bob and I were listed as the co-chairs.  Our role was that of apprentices.  It is rather doubtful that we could have had a better set of mentors, for they both were exemplary in fulfilling all of the responsibilities with full on commitment, diplomacy, and a large dose of levity.  Without witnessing the contribution from Tom and Donna our work as the full out chairs the following year would surely have faltered.
It is a glorious phenomenon, we heard it from the mouths of many parishioners that the fair runs itself.  Okay, it is not a legend!  There are enough people around who set aside a portion of the spring and summer and gear up for tackling a set of chores that keep the motion of sorting, evaluating, pricing, lifting, making runs to the dump, and setting up, selling, cooking, counting the cash, and closing up that all things come together in an uplifting way.  Thanks to all the hands, hearts, and spirits the fair works because of the selfless dedication demonstrated over the years.  To realize this to see the full picture is a precious by-product of making the commitment to being a fair-chair.  If you haven't tried this spiritual superfood I do recommend it.

All Sainters' Support Kenyan Student
An exciting new ministry is underway; learn about it at our Ministry Fair on Sunday after both services in the Parish Hall.
Last Sunday, the Vestry approved the Mission Outreach Team's proposal to support a Kenyan students' 4-year high school education. We are working with NH based Education For All Children (EFAC) to pay a young girl's tuition since public high scholl isn't available in Kenya. Parishioners Gail Dietzer, Judy Cole, Gerry DeGeorge, Terri White, Dianne and Phil Wasmuth have already sponsored EFAC students privately.
EFAC founding Board member, Janet Crowder, will be at the Ministry Fair to introduce us to EFAC's work and mission. Please welcome Janet and catch her enthusiasm for this succesful program. Details on our specific student will be available shortly.

UTO is Back!
Do you need a new Little Blue Box? Beginning this fall, All Saints Church will restore its semi-annual United Thank Offering Ingathering of coins that individual Episcopalians give as daily expressions of thanks for their many blessings. Most parishioners keep their Blue Box on their dresser where they can drop in their change at the end of the day. Collected twice a year, the contents of a Blue Box may seem small, but pooled together across the diocese and the wider church, they become a mighty sum that can do great good at home and abroad. The fall UTO Ingathering is held on a Sunday in October so that collected gifts can be presented at Diocesan Convention the first weekend in November. Watch for the date in the next issues of All Saints E-mail. New Blue Boxes and envelopes will be available in the narthex during the next few Sundays.

A Season of Thankfulness
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5
Bishop Rob reminds us "when Jesus identifies himself with a grapevine and God the Father as the vinedresser, he's not talking about making grapes.  He's talking about the resilient, relentlessly outstretching, and healthy life that God longs for all of us." With Jesus as the vine, we are the branches that are connected to God and one another. We grow and produce good fruit through our life together for one another and for the sake of the world.

During the coming weeks, we will be focusing on the abundant leaves of blessing, the gifts we are given and give thanks for. Your worship bulletin will contain a green leaf of thanksgiving each week for you to share a blessing you are thankful for and place in the offering plate. We will share some of the blessings in worship and visually connect them to an ever growing vine of interconnectedness. The leaders of All Saints' hope the growing display of our abundant blessing moves us to recognize more and more the many ways we are blessed.

We will meet each week (with some exceptions), from 4:00-5:30pm in the Gathering Space at FCCW, 115 S. Main St. We will spend a few weeks on each book that we read.
