A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 12 05 16

Parents and Guardians,

I hope you were able to make it out to LHS this past weekend for our LISD Fine Arts Festival. The weekend was packed with performances from all of our Fine Arts groups across the district, as well as Visual Arts displays from students K-12. It is one of my favorite events of the year because it highlights the incredible work done by our students and their directors and teachers.

Please take a few minutes to look at the upcoming events listed below. Although we only have two weeks of school left until the end of the semester, there are lots of great things going on here at LHS. Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

Senior Project Judges Needed
We are still in need of a few judges for the December 7th Presentation Night!

Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.

If you have never judged before, judges training will begin at 5:30 pm in the Lovejoy High School Library. Dinner will be provided. Presentations will begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 9:00 p.m. at the latest.

If you would like to sign-up to judge, please complete the google form below:

Please contact Sara Seoighe ( sara_seoighe@lovejoyisd.net ) with questions.

BrightBytes Parent Survey
Lovejoy ISD is partnering with BrightBytes, an educational research organization, to learn more about our students' school and home technology use and the impact it has on instruction. We are reaching out to ask you to take part in the Technology & Learning questionnaire. This is a semi-annual initiative, and your participation is essential in helping us form a more complete picture of the role technology plays in your students' learning. Please know that all of your responses will remain anonymous to protect your privacy. http://www.BByt.es/6L9DP

Financial Aid Night
For LHS Parents (and interested students), the College and Career Counseling Office will host Bill Mack on Tuesday, December 13, for an update about recent changes in Financial Aid and how you might improve your chances of qualifying for various awards. Bill is the Associate Director of Financial Aid at the University of Texas at Dallas and can cover details of the process for all colleges/universities. The program will begin at 6:30PM in the LHS Lecture Hall. Please join us for an informative evening. Thanks, and we hope to see you there!

Foundation for Lovejoy Schools
2016 Annual Appeal Ends December 31, 2016
As the end of the calendar year approaches, the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools would like to say thank you for your generosity to our annual appeal campaign. We have received donations from 554 donors totaling $160,842.71. This is just a little shy of our goal of $200,000 and 650 donors. If you haven't donated yet or you wish to make a final end of year tax-deductible donation, please click here .  Without you, we could not carry out our mission to enhance the educational experiences for Lovejoy students and staff.

Give to the Foundation by Shopping with AmazonSmile

LHS Quiz Bowl Team
With their performance at The HO! HO! HO! this weekend, the LHS team is now ranked #3 in the state to finish the semester having compiled a 20-12 match record on the year so far, and they have qualified for both the state and national tournaments.

This past Saturday, the Quiz Bowl team traveled to Houston to compete in the Houston Holiday Hoedown (HO HO HO) tournament against 28 teams from across the state. The team got off to the best start in program history and finished the prelim rounds with a 6-0 record, earning them a #3 seed and a 1st round bye for the afternoon tournament.

Unfortunately, St. Thomas got on a late roll to overcome a 120 pt deficit to defeat us in the round of 16. The LHS team finished with a respectable 6-1 record despite the difficult loss.

Additionally, the LHS team recently completed a semester-long nationwide, online tournament. For 8 weeks, teams competed against other teams from across the nation in weekly matches. The LHS Quiz Bowlers won 2 matches and qualified for the tournament of champions and advanced to the semifinals where they fell short of advancing to the finals by only 5 points (less than 1 question).

The Varsity team is composed of Noah Corbitt, John Reaves, Tommy Rousey, Marcus Mao, and Katherine Guo. Congratulations to these students on the strongest semester of quiz bowl in school history.

Taylor Carty placed 2nd in Clinical Nursing

Biomedical Debate Team - 2nd place
Ellie Hager, Mikey Franks, Caroline Smith and Sean Gassman

Hannah Karst placed 6th in Veterinary Science

Gabby Glorioso placed 11th in Medical Spelling

IF they place in the top three, they will advance to State.

LHS Robotics
In our first competition, the Cumby Starstruck Competition, the LHS Robotics team took 1st and 3rd. This qualifies us for the North Texas Regional Qualifiers and the U.S. Open Qualifier tournament for the VEX World Championships. There were 24 teams, including notables -  Southlake Carroll, Richardson Berkner, Greenville, Garland Neo Bots, Skyline, and two strong homeschool teams - Iron Wave and Unchartered Waters. All of these were State qualifiers last year. Please congratulate team member participants - Ryan Luther, Hunter Tombaugh, Max Hooper, Chase Barnes, Connor Redding, Matthew Franks, Jolina Tran, Madison Hubbard, and Austin Marlar. It was a great start to the new season. Look for more updates on our XtremeEngineering LHS Facebook page.
