Lubricant filtration
Lubricant filtration is one of the components of a lubrication program. It extends lubricant and machinery life by controlling contamination. 

Nonetheless, choosing the right filter based on its application, how much dirt can it hold, along with where to place it and which factors could affect its performance are crucial to maximize the return on investment.

Differences in Hydraulic and Lubrication System Filters

Although the basic principles of filtration are the same in each case, there are slight differences in filters based on the application.

In most force-fed lubrication systems, the filter is after the pump and before the critical machine components. This location poses several problems for the filter. The first issue is the flow rate. Often a filter located at this point in the system will have to deal with 100 percent of the flow coming from the pump.

Great emphasis has been placed on contamination control within lubricating systems. By limiting the amount of contaminants entering the lubricant, you can effectively extend the life of the equipment and the oil. Reducing the ingression rate is one part of achieving maximum machinery reliability; the other part is removing contaminants as quickly as they are introduced.

 


 
Perhaps the most common method of removing contaminants is utilizing filtration. Filters come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be installed in multiple locations. There are many factors that can affect oil filtration, including the oil's viscosity, flow and pressure of the oil system, oil type, the components to be protected and their cleanliness requirements, the conditions of the operating environment, and the physical filter (size, media, micron rating, dirt-holding capacity, bypass valve cracking pressure, etc.), as well as the cost of the filter.  Continue reading.

This Plastic Injection Molding case study by Hy-Pro Filtration shows what a difference the proper filtering system makes to fluid cleanliness and equipment uptime. 


 
The Problem:

A plastic injection molding manufacturer was experiencing frequent equipment failures due to hydraulic fluid
contamination.
The Solution:
A PM-1 particle monitor was used to identify the most contaminated system. This system contained approximately 110 gallons of hydraulic fluid with an ISO cleanliness code of 21/19/14 (photo 1).
