To our Lucky Dog Family -
Each year around the Fourth of July, I start to think what it means to celebrate one's independence. For Americans, it usually means fireworks, BBQs, and parties. It means a day off work and a country coming together to honor our nation's birth.
For every Lucky Dog, however, it means something different.
Every two to three weeks, I watch a van full of Lucky Dogs arrive after a long drive from the high kill shelters in South Carolina to the loving arms of their new fosters and adopters. We open the doors to the van, and suddenly, a chorus of barking begins. Many of them seem to know what freedom they will have once the crate door opens. They know this day is their independence day.
The outgoing pups bound out of their crates and of off the van. Tails wagging. Bodies wiggling. Tongues ready to kiss the first available face. They know their life has suddenly changed for the better.
Others are slightly more reserved. First they poke their nose of the crate. Then their tails start to thump against the sides of the crate as they start to see the people around them. Then they slowly creep out of the crate, and their tail wags a bit faster. And, all of a sudden, they're our and walking with confidence: excited to be on the road to a new life.
Some are really scared. They see the faces and feel the excitement all around, but they don't know what it means. They're not sure that they like it. The crate may be confining, but it is safe and familiar. Sometimes we have to take the crate apart around these more scared, more reserved Lucky Dogs. We have to nudge them into their new lives. These poor pups have been denied their independence for so long, they don't know what to do when faced with it.
I love transport days. I love unloading the van and seeing each dog meet his or her independence, his or her freedom from shelter life. I love knowing that each one of them will become an entirely new, entirely different dog in the days, weeks, and months ahead. They will gain confidence, they will learn how to trust, and they will truly become free.
Lucky for us, Independence Day comes frequently. Your generous support enables us to schedule transports every 2-3 weeks. Enables us to give more than 100 dogs their freedom each and every month. And, enables us to meet their every need until they find a forever home.
Thank you on behalf of all the Lucky Dogs!

Pets, Thunderstorms, and Fireworks
Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM
As many pet lovers know, fireworks and thunderstorms can cause a great deal of stress for some animals. Fear of loud sounds - fireworks, thunder, gunshot - are called noise phobias. For a pet affected by loud noises, this is a terrifying and uncomfortable time; both for the pet and the people. Your pet cannot control their reaction to loud noises. Many therapies exist to help with this condition.
Learn to recognize the signs of noise phobias and some tips to reduce fears.

Patty Myers
Adoption Coordinator and Foster
After losing my beloved dog, Jake, I wanted a dog to be a companion to my dog, Maggie. I ended up adopting from Lucky Dog... and so it began. I initially viewed the website regularly and contributed donations when I could. Then I started volunteering as a handler and home visitor. Now, I contribute as a foster and adoption coordinator. Thanks to my Lucky Dog experience, I now have three new family members - Spencer, Tucker, and Caleb - who fill my life with joy. I hope while I volunteer with Lucky Dog, I can help many pups and families come to know that same joy.

Bama Needs a Little Luck!
Bama is a special girl. Her former foster mom reports that Bama is very bright and observant, she learns things quickly, especially if food is involved. She also has a unique way of playing. Bama will crouch down as if she is ready to pounce like a tiger, then she will hop up like a bunny and bounce around her doggy playmates. It is hysterical to watch! When she sleeps, Bama loves to snuggle with her human or canine family. She loves people, but she can be shy at first, so she would prefer a family with another dog to help her adjust to the new setting. However, she wouldn't do well in a home with very small dogs, cats, or young children, since she wants to be the baby!
