The Christian festival of Candlemas -- equivalent to Imbolc and also celebrated as Groundhog Day -- is the festival when the light of Spring returns for certain-sure. This year we are introducing a brand new candle to our lovely line-up: the Van Van Vigil Light.
Van Van is the most classic of the New Orleans "Algiers style" formulas, known for clearing away evil, opening roads to opportunities, empowering charms and amulets, and changing bad luck into good.
As Miss catherine yronwode points out in
"Hoodoo in Theory and Practice,"
"It is an interesting curiosity to note that due to the 'Van' sound in the name of this formula, many people assume that it contains Vanilla scent -- but such is not the case. Instead, as pointed out by Dr. James Dotson, who has extensively researched the history of perfumes, Van Van is a phonetic pronunciation of the French word Verveine, a name of a flowering plant commonly known as Verbena or Vervain in English. In the Creole French dialect of Louisiana, Vervain is pronounced 'Vaah-Vahn.' And, indeed, Dr. Dotson has found records of old hand-written formularies archived at the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum which indicate that as early as 1900, 'Verveine' perfume was made with Lemon Grass. The reason for this substitution, as best i can determine, is that Verbena itself does not produce a stable essential oil for perfumery, but Lemon Verbena, a popular species of Verbena, does smell a great deal like Lemon Grass or its close relative, Citronella Grass."

- Hoodoo Bath Crystals here at Lucky Mojo are made in the old-fashioned Southern style, with genuine roots and herbs. These mineral Bath Crystals are packaged in foil packets with vivid graphic labels and full instructions for use, including prayers. Although we call them Bath Crystals, another name for them is Crystal Salts, and they can also be dissolved in water to make up a floor wash or laundry rinse.

Apprenticeship Week
May 8-12, 2017

The Hoodoo and Conjure Apprenticeship Program, taught by catherine yronwode, is a free three-week series of lectures, personal training, and hands-on guidance in the history and use of conjure supplies.
There are three lecture classes during each week, taught by cat, and two work-days during each week, supervised by the Lucky Mojo Shop Manager, Heidi Simpson.
Each year, during the week preceding the May Hoodoo Workshops sponsored by Missionary Independent Spiritual Church, we hold a week of Apprenticeship training, and the curriculum of that week rotates throughout the three-week cycle, so that within three years a graduate can take all three weeks of Apprenticeship training and earn an Apprenticeship certificate. This year we will be working through the third week of the training program.
Week Three: Baths; Sachets; Jack Balls
Monday: Bath Crystals Lecture; Making Bath Crystals
Tuesday: Making and Praying Over Bath Crystals
Wednesday: Sachets Lecture; Making Sachets
Thursday: Making and Praying Over Sachets
