School District 11 Grants Anti-Discrimination Protection
S chool District 11 grants anti-discrimination protection to transgender status, gender identity and gender expression.
Posted by Wyatt Miller on Thu, Jun 14, 2012 at 5:20 PM
Rhetoric ran convoluted and dense at last night's Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education meeting. The board's discussion, which concerned a proposed revision to the district's anti-discrimination policy to explicitly protect gender expression and transgender students from various forms of bullying, occasionally became highly technical - or veered off-topic entirely. Although an unvoiced political dimension seemed to overshadow some of the conversation, the result was what Shawna Kemppainen, executive director of Inside Out Youth Services, called "a great outcome."
And to be sure, the motion passed, but not without a lengthy and sometimes tense discussion on its wording, and what it did and did not include.

Teen Years Tougher For LGBT Youth, Study Finds
LGBT teenagers are far more likely to face both physical and verbal abuse than their straight counterparts, and most say they will have to move away from their communities to find acceptance, according to a study of about 10,000 LGBT teens released by the Human Rights Campaign. "These are young people. They worry about which hall they can walk down at school, which table they have to avoid in the lunchroom, what happens at church on Sunday and whether they need to hide their identity from their family," said Chad Griffin, HRC's new president. Without Our Uniforms We're Still In The Closet
OUTServe shouldn't be asking lesbian and gay vets to march without their uniforms
By Speak Out June 11, 2012 | 11:13 am
By Mike Yost
I sat in the coffee shop shaking my head in disbelief as I read the article on my laptop. LGBT servicemembers were being asked not to wear their uniforms in Pride Parades this year - by their own peers.
The piece was written by the Leadership Council of OutServe, a non-profit organization made up of active-duty LGBT personnel working to secure the rights of LGBT servicemembers. They have over 5,000 members with 50 chapters throughout the world. OutServe played a key role in the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
And now the organization was recommending that servicemembers should leave their uniforms at home and march in civilian clothes this Pride season.
"There is a time and a place for everything," the article read, "and this year is probably not the time to make waves."
OutServe stated that because LGBT servicemembers serving openly is still a contentious issue, marching in uniform at Pride could be seen as an act of protest. "Let's wait a year, demonstrate our professionalism as we march in civilian clothes, and next year, having proven ourselves, we can work with the Department and gain formal approval to proudly march together as a uniformed contingent for Pride." * Opinion Article Read More Back To Top |
