Grace Potter

Iron City

Citing Miles Davis, Dylan, the Beatles, Bowie, Blondie and Beck, Grace Potter says she is drawn to artists who make sonic leaps from record to record--a notion she has explored throughout her career. Tickets are sold out for Friday's show but Thursday tickets are still available.

 

Lyric Theatre Grand Opening
January 14-16, 7:30 p.m.
The Lyric Theatre

This year's "Live at the Lyric" performing arts season is the theatre's first of its kind in 80 years. The grand opening event will be a great vaudeville-style revue with a contemporary twist. Dolores Hydock, Sharrif Simmons, and Bobby Horton will host the night's entertainment featuring local acts Three on a String and The Birmingham Sunlights.

Music Poster Show Exhibit
January 14, 6-8 p.m.
Alabama Center for Architecture

The ACFA hosts an opening reception for a show featuring hand-selected posters curated from private collections spanning from a 1969 Rolling Stones poster to more recent bands like Grateful Dead, Phish, Wide Spread Panic, and many more.

 

Heart of Dixie Open Home Brewing Competition
January 16, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Good People Brewing Company

The Bama Cannas kick off the day by showcasing their extensive can collections, followed by food trucks, musical offerings, and other homebrewers showcasing their brews. You'll also get the chance to try last year's Brewer's Choice winner.

 

BrickFair LEGO Expo
January 16-17, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.
The BJCC

Join fans from around the globe  and be amazed by LEGO creations. Shop aisles of LEGO goodies and discover lego models and winding trains, all spread over 71,000 square feet. Check out our feature story on BrickFair here.

 

The State Ballet Theatre of Russia
January 17,  2 & 7 p.m.
The Lyric Theatre

The State Ballet Theatre of Russia  brings  Romeo and Juliet  to Birmingham during the highly anticipated Lyric Theatre grand opening weekend .   Attendees will enjoy a beautiful take on this classic performance as the company presents 55 of Russia's brightest ballet stars who will bring to life the most passionate romantic tragedy ever told.
   
 


The SoHo Bridal Show
January 17, 1-4 p.m.
Rosewood Hall at SoHo Square

More than 50 of Birmingham's elite wedding professionals will be offering cake and food tastings, wedding gowns, and trends in invitations, floral design, and gift registry. The first 100 brides to pre-register online will receive a wedding day swag bag filled with goodies and coupons.  

 

Elevate The Stage 
January 17, 3-5 p.m. 
Legacy Arena at The BJCC

This gymnastics meet will feature the University of Alabama and Auburn University and  provide a championship caliber platform for the student-athletes.  Elevate has joined in a partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama and Camp Smile-A-Mile for the event.
 

ASO Presents A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
January 17, 3 p.m.
Alys Stephens Performing Art Center

The powerful voices of the Aeolians of Oakwood University join the Alabama Symphony Orchestra for this yearly concert celebrating the legacy and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement.


 

30th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast
January 18, 7:30-9 a.m.
The BJCC

The annual breakfast is Birmingham's biggest forum to celebrate our legacy of racial reconciliation and educate today's youth. This year's theme is "Beyond Poverty."


 

La Traviata
January 22, 7:30 p.m.
Wright Center, Samford University

Experience the power of love and sacrifice as one of the most beloved operas of all time returns to the Opera Birmingham stage, featuring Verdi's spectacular music and memorable melodies. La Traviata will star soprano Jan Cornelius in her role debut as Violetta, one of the most iconic roles in opera.
