Important Partner Agency Information
(Partner Agency Survey, Hunger Action Month,
Product Inventory Reminders and Upcoming Closures)
If you have not yet had a chance to take a look at the 2018 Partner Agency Survey, we invite you to share your best, most honest feedback on how MANNA can improve our service to your agency and the broader WNC Community. You are the experts in our shared work to end hunger and we deeply value what you have to say.

Please take 10-15 minutes to complete our Annual Partner Agency Survey. This survey is anonymous and we encourage you to be truly honest and share your best ideas for making things better. Thanks in advance for your input!
Hunger Action Month is Coming Soon!

As September quickly approaches, folks familiar with hunger relief work know that next month is Hunger Action Month (HAM); an entire month dedication to uniting with other Feeding America affiliates in the joint effort of taking action and finding ways to support our communities in the work of relieving hunger.

With that being said, we would love to highlight public HAM events that your organization is hosting! This could be food drives, Empty Bowls events, community cookouts or anything in between. Please send the following information to your Zone Coordinator so that we can support you in taking action to end the hunger crisis:

  • Name of Partner organization
  • Name or description of event
  • Date and time
  • Link to website, or information on where to find more info

Once you submit the above information, your event will be added to a master calendar that will be going to all WNC media outlets, as well as all MANNA supporters via our Fresh News eblast, social media, and our website. Take advantage of this FREE advertising opportunity for a great cause!
Important Reminders and Upcoming Closure Information
To ensure that our inventory count lines up with what we are actually distributing to our partner network, we ask that you all make sure to check the following when you receive or pick up your order from MANNA:
  • Check that product ordered (from your invoice) matches physical count of items you received
  • Pay close attention to TEFAP items especially, and make sure you receive accurate amounts of each item. Any TEFAP leftovers should always be directly reported to MANNA.
  • If there are any discrepancies in inventory vs. what was actually ordered, please contact Glenda Gragg (x1227) or Tim Williams (x1240).

Upcoming Closure Information
  • MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2018 (LABOR DAY)
Please plan accordingly, and be sure to consider this closure when shopping and placing your online order. Contact Glenda Gragg if you have any questions at 828-299-3663 x1227.
MANNA FoodBank Pop-Up Markets
Coming Soon to a Community Near You!
Growing to Meet the Need
MANNA FoodBank works with hundreds of local partner nonprofits across 16 Western North Carolina counties to provide fresh produce to residents struggling to afford groceries. In 2013, MANNA began a partnership with Buncombe County to provide fresh produce at pop-up style markets for government housing communities. In 2016, a capital expansion created more climate-controlled warehouse space, enabling MANNA to source and distribute more fresh foods; now, over 30% of MANNA’s food inventory is fresh produce. As a result of the increased capacity for fresh produce, at the end of 2016, the food bank launched MANNA Express, a perishable foods distribution method created specifically as a resource to support partner agencies. MANNA has since distributed more than 1.3 million pounds of fresh foods to communities across 16 counties of WNC through MANNA Express distributions alone.

MANNA Pop-Up Markets: Seeking Community Partners
MANNA is currently seeking community interest for a pilot program to provide fresh produce via a pop-up style market to more people across the 16-county service area, particularly areas that experience high poverty and don’t have regular access to food support, like pantries or other regular food distributions.
MANNA Pop-Up Markets will be available to any community in MANNA’s service area, not just official partner agencies. MANNA is currently seeking community groups and individuals who are interested in hosting a MANNA Pop-Up Market, and will be providing an info session for the public in the coming month to provide details on how the pop-up markets work.

If you or your community group is interested in hosting a MANNA Pop-Up Market, please contact Agency Relations Manager, Amy Haynes, by emailing her at [email protected] with the subject line “MANNA Pop-Up Interest.”
Nutrition Corner
Back-to School Breakfasts
Contributed by WCU Nutrition and Dietetics student Kristen Miles
We hear the phrase all the time—breakfast is the most important meal of the day—yet many people report that they regularly skip breakfast. With school starting back and mornings becoming rushed and stressful once again, breakfast is often the last thing on a parent’s mind; however, children who skip breakfast are more likely to have academic, behavioral, or emotional struggles than children who regularly consume breakfast. Here are some ideas to help you make breakfast a part of your family’s morning routine!
-          Make breakfast the day or night before. Recipes such as overnight oats, breakfast casseroles, and eggs can be prepared in advance so that they are ready to eat in the morning.
-          Aim to wake up ten minutes earlier than usual. Just 10 extra minutes is typically enough time for a brief, sit-down breakfast.
-          Eat breakfast before getting ready. Instead of leaving breakfast until the last minute, try eating before you are ready to leave the house. If breakfast is the last thing you need to do, it is easy to run out of time, so putting it first sets it as a priority.

NCDA Offering Commodity Supplemental Food Programming (CSFP) for Seniors Across WNC
The NCDA&CS Food Distribution Division is continuing to grow the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) throughout North Carolina. The NCDA is excited to report that CSFP distributions have grown over the past 2 years, from June 2016 with distribution in one county to 39 counties as of July 2018. CSFP distributions would not be possible without the dedication of local agencies and volunteers who serve the Senior population.
The USDA has submitted a budget for potential growth for the upcoming 2019 year. With the current administration in Washington, D.C., we are not guaranteed that there will be any growth in this program but NCDA&CS wants to be prepared. The NCDA&CS Food Distribution Division will be submitting a request to the USDA office on November 2, 2018 for additional CSFP caseload slots. If your organization is interested in participating in CSFP and/or if you are an agency that is currently participating and would like to request a slot increase, you will need to provide Melissa Ayscue, NCDA Household Programs Administrator, a list of the county(s) in which you plan to distribute CSFP and the projected number of participants to be served per county.

The deadline to submit your request is October 26, 2018.

If you have any questions or need additional information regarding CSFP, please feel free to contact Melissa Ayscue at [email protected] or reach out to your Zone Coordinator.

Mobile Delivery Schedule-July-September 2018
REMINDERS: Before dialing up the driver, remember: Every time someone calls, they must pull off the road to answer the phone, causing additional delays. If you have any questions, contact our Warehouse Manager Lee Short at (828) 299-3663 x1260.

Please ask your volunteers to allow a 30 minute window before and after your expected MANNA delivery. Our drivers work very hard to arrive on time, but they may experience unforeseen setbacks while on the road. Giving them this window helps them to stay on track.
