MANNA MESSAGE
September, 2018
Hunger Action Month is Now!
September is here, and that means Hunger Action Month is too! Hunger Action Month (also known as HAM) is an entire month dedicated to uniting with other Feeding America affiliates in the joint effort of taking action and finding ways to support our communities in the work of relieving hunger.

Thanks so much to those who sent us the wonderful community events that you will be hosting, and more importantly for taking action in hunger awareness and relief efforts during this very special month. If you would like to get involved, it's not too late! Feel free to attend any/all of the events listed on the MANNA HAM Event Calendar:
MANNA's says Goodbye to Buncombe County Zone Coordinator, Amy Meier
With best wishes and love, MANNA says goodbye to our Buncombe County Zone Coordinator, Amy Meier.
Who better to share a sentimental note about her announcement than Amy Meier herself:

"It has been a pleasure to serve you and our community for the last 5+ years and get to know some of you. Your dedication, work ethic and kind hearts have often lifted me up. Working together helps to restore faith in humanity. Seeing the relationships and care throughout our network is truly touching to my heart. This was a tough letter to write, I will miss working with you to end hunger, as this is the week I must say goodbye to my MANNA family.

I won’t be far and may cross paths with some of you or pay some visits in my personal time. I have been so inspired and impressed to see your dedication to service, it will continue to draw me in."

In Amy’s time at MANNA, she has served in several roles within the organization. She started out her career here as a member of the Development team before moving to Agency Relations, where she has served as Buncombe County Outreach Coordinator for more than four years. In this role she has offered strong support for her agencies, advocated for the needs of clients and communities, and brought food stamp outreach services to agencies across Buncombe County. Amy has made a significant contribution to MANNA’s Public Policy Committee in helping to shape MANNA’s advocacy strategy on the work to end hunger on a public policy level. We are so appreciative of Amy’s contributions to the mission of MANNA FoodBank, and we wish her well in all her future endeavors!

During this time, if you are a Buncombe County agency in need of support, please contact MANNA's Agency Relations Manager, Amy Haynes, for assistance.

Nutrition Corner
Meal Preparation
Contributed by WCU Nutrition and Dietetics student Kristen Miles
In keeping with last month’s make-ahead breakfast theme, this month we will look at bulk meal preparation, or getting extra food ready ahead of time. An example is casseroles that are prepared, then frozen instead of baked. These casseroles can then be baked on a different day for a quick, easy dinner. Another example would be cooking up a large package of chicken, then making several different chicken dinners throughout the week with the already-cooked chicken. Finally, many people enjoy using meal preparation for packed lunches to enjoy in place of vending machine snacks or fast food lunches.

Not only does meal prepping save us time in the future, but it also can save us money, as buying larger quantities of food at once is cheaper than purchasing the same amount of food in lots of smaller amounts. The original investment in meal prepping may sound difficult for those of us living “paycheck-to-paycheck,” but preparing a simple recipe that makes just a few extra meals is a great place to start! Try your hand at the recipe below if you want to try a quick meal preparation.

Important Inventory Reminders
To ensure that our inventory count lines up with what we are actually distributing to our partner network, we ask that you all make sure to check the following when you receive or pick up your order from MANNA:
  • Check that product ordered (from your invoice) matches physical count of items you received
  • Pay close attention to TEFAP items especially, and make sure you receive accurate amounts of each item. Any TEFAP leftovers should always be directly reported to MANNA.
  • If there are any discrepancies in inventory vs. what was actually ordered, please contact Glenda Gragg (x1227) or Tim Williams (x1240).
Mobile Delivery Schedule
September-December 2018
REMINDERS: Before dialing up the driver, remember: Every time someone calls, they must pull off the road to answer the phone, causing additional delays. If you have any questions, contact our Warehouse Manager Lee Short at (828) 299-3663 x1260.

Please ask your volunteers to allow a 30 minute window before and after your expected MANNA delivery. Our drivers work very hard to arrive on time, but they may experience unforeseen setbacks while on the road. Giving them this window helps them to stay on track.
