Letter from the President

Dear MAPA Members,

It's only May, and MAPA has already had two great events! On April 15, MAPA joined forces with the Parking Association of the Virginias for a Spring Training Workshop on Tactical Communications. The class was taught by Cindy Campbell from IPI.  Over 50 members from both organizations came together for the training, lunch and industry round-table discussions.

On May 12, we hosted MAPA's first Parking & Baseball Family Night at Orioles Park at Camden Yards. Some 30 members brought their kids and other family and friends to see the Orioles beat the Tigers 7-5.

MAPA is looking for members to contribute to the Newsletter.  If you have something you think other members might enjoy please send it to MAPA's Administrator, Dawn Marti.

As always please feel free to contact myself or any of the other board members with your ideas and suggestions.   See you at an upcoming event!

"How Parking Saved My Life"
By:  Larry J. Cohen, CAPP

We've all heard and mostly agree that "...we didn't grow up wanting to be parking professionals..."  So for most of us, we somehow found our way into the profession. Our paths to becoming  parking professionals is as diverse as the cars parked in our garages.  My story is no different.  But in many ways, parking saved my life,  and maybe yours as well.

Greenbelt Station Parking Structure Takes Shape
Design of the Verde at Greenbelt Station parking structure offered numerous challenges even during the bid process, as features including precast planters hung off the spandrels, separate cornice pieces, and a non-repetitive mix of architectural colors and textures were added to the design. Shockey's flexibility and expertise in handling complex parking structure projects ensured that the changes were quickly and seamlessly incorporated into the estimating process, and a price and schedule were developed that would meet the Owner's budget and overall construction schedule, as well as aesthetic vision for the Verde at Greenbelt Station residential community.
