Dear friends and fans of Matter, We recently applied for a Mission: Small Business grant with the goal to grow our in-house enterprise, MatterMade. This grant will help us continue to foster American design and production - two things we hold very close to our hearts. Working with emerging American designers to produce work within the United States and supporting our local economy by manufacturing as close to home as possible has been a challenge and a pleasure. We are honored to see MatterMade published internationally and watch our designers become well regarded names within the industry.
Please take a moment to help us. If we receive 250 votes on the Mission: Small Business page we will qualify to compete for a $250,000 grant. For easy instructions to vote click here. Thanks in advance for your support and to those of you who have already voted for Matter we are truly grateful.

ROSSHAARMATRATZEN

|
Swiss designer Daniel Heer presented an on-site demonstration of the traditional craft of making Rosshaarmatratzen or horsehair mattresses. Heer typically sources the kind of fine wool used in quality men's suits, but this time opted for denim to craft a uniquely American version. It was beautiful to witness the detailed handicraft of this piece, which included steps one might never consider, like breaking down excess fabric into individual threads to make mattress buttons. Wow.

BOFFO

|

Shed by Harry Allen for MatterMade was featured at the Boffo Show House in the Lower East Side. Curated by designer Andrew Yes, four unique bi-level apartment spaces were assembled with the themes Future, Nature, Work, and Play. Billed as a cutting-edge experiment in living aimed at redefining interior spaces, the show did well in pushing the envelope of contemporary arrangement.

HOTEL CALIFORNIA

|

Matt Gagnon's Knit Fort was built on the terrace of The Standard Hotel East Village as part of Sight Unseen's Hotel California exhibit. The Knit Fort is a flexible hardwood structure made of simple parts assembled using a technique similar to knitting. Depending on the scale, the structure can be a play space, terrace sunshade, conference room dome, outdoor shower or interior/exterior cabana. This item is now available through Matter.
