Last week we were privileged to have Matthew teach a three day course at Moor Hall. We had a full class and a very productive time was had by all.
Matthew is always able to extract such exciting work from the students he teaches and makes them think in different and very inventive ways, stretching their own working practice.
Here are some examples of what they did,
Working from a piece of hand written text, which may or may not have held significance to the students, they set about trying to copy the style of writing. This proved to be very challenging but set the scene for what was to come.
Once the style of writing was fixed in the students head they began to explore other ways of writing the same text using different dry drawing media on the end of a long stick: using more than one media for double lines, watered down and neat drawing ink for different tones etc.
Introducing colour added yet another dimension to their large scale works.
Next students began, cutting and tearing the work and re-positioning to create new compositions. New paper surfaces were also being explored.
These few samples show the wall displays that were slowly building up.
Finally fabric and stitch, using a wide variety of media were explored, with new discoveries constantly being made.
