This is a public page, you do not have to be a facebook user to see our postings.
Facebook is where we post pictures, updates, and interesting videos.

In particular we post links to examples of good skiing so our skiers can see and be motivated by the best skiers in the world.

Loving our iPads.
We have moved all our video work to the i Pads.  We have 3 i Pads with aps to compare our skiing to the best skiers in the world.

MBSEF skiers are empowered.  They use iPads daily to look at their skiing compared to the best skiers in the world.

It's a great day when we hear, "Dan, I was looking at video and......"

Empowering skiers.

Here you see Spokane skier Annie Pokorny who now races for Stratton Mt. Team T2 on top and MBSEF skier Emily  Hyde on the bottom.

Summer Camp Season
It could be a post on "Skiers say what," but Skyler Kenna captured the sentiment of many when he once said, "I wish we could summer ski all year long."

There something special about the spring and summer on snow camps.  It's a new beginning. Warmer weather and high energy prevail as we all get back together and kick off a new training year.   It's a time to refocus.  It's a time to get some really sore muscles.  Sore feels good this time of year.  Sore is new hope.

MBSEF will be hosting our ever more popular on snow camps this May and June.

First, camp updates and details will be posted to the MBSEF Nordic Facebook page.  Like us so you get updates.  This is a public page so you don't need to join FB to view it.

What about the Snow?

Our Snow Base Today 4/11/2014

Everyone wants to know what the snow conditions are.  We've had 362 inches of snow which is average for Mt. Bachelor and we are cooler and still getting snow.  We managed to have camp last year in one of the worst snow years ever so unless there's a drastic change in the weather pattern, I don't see any problems skiing on the Nordic trail this year.

Memorial Day Camp

Memorial Day Camp runs alongside the USST's Spring Camp May 24-26. Camp training parallels the USST's training.  When they skate, we skate; their classic is our classic.  Each day we'll work on technique and fitness but when we can, we follow them.  When they do uphill intervals we chase them.  If they do distance we'll send skiers that are ready to follow them.  It's pretty special to see these young skier at the end of a train lead by Kikkan, Liz, Jessie, Holly, etc.

This is a great short camp.  Many of our campers are on first name basis with the USST skiers.  Oh yes, and when the girls all go to the Fast and Female Clinic, the boys do Slow and Bro...  We should trademark that.   We ski all three mornings and do dry land Saturday and Sunday.  Monday we depart at lunch.

Fire and Ice Camp

Fire and Ice is the latest open on snow camp in the US.  Versions of this camp have been around since the late 70's.  This year the camp runs June 13-18.  We will ski and dryland each day except on the 18th we will only ski.  We will again do our strength and uphill running tests and do our Occupy Nordic overnight in the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center the night of the 17th.  Once again we will have two special invited coaches that will motivate and inspire us (names to be announced).

General Camp Information

Camps are best for high school, college, and middle school skiers.  5th and 6th graders should be pretty motivated to attend.

Afternoon dryland sessions are designed to challenge and motivate skiers.

Memorial Day camp will have a strength and bounding sessioons.

Durring Fire and Ice we will again do the Canadian Strength Test and the Awbrey Butte running time trial to compare our fitness to last year and to each other.  We may do the Tetherow roller ski time trial.

Daily Schedule:

All camps base from the MBSEF office @563 SW 13th, Bend OR.  We are in the lower level facing Century Drive (which is actually 14th street).  Town Place Suites is next door.

Our general schedule will be:

  • 7:30 Office Opens.
  • 8 AM meet for morning workout.  We will typically be back between 11 and noon.
  • 8:15 depart for skiing.
  • 2:30 afternoon workout.  We should be done by 4:30.
  • Skiers are free to leave for lunch or to hang around MBSEF.  Within walking distance of the office are several restaurants, a Safeway, Subway, Pizza place, Taco Del Mar, etc.
  • We will have video available on Ipads.

Things to bring:

  • Skate and classic skis, boots, poles.  If you have older equipment, bring it and your good stuff.  The snow could really dirty or really fresh and clean.  We'll have supplies so you can clean and wax on a daily basis.
  • Skis will travel on top of the vans.  You can use your bags or we'll have several large community bags available.
  • Touring skis.  During FIre and Ice we will do a ski up into the National Forest toward Broken Top Mountain.  If it freezes overnight, skate skis are best.  If it's warm and soft I like to use old no wax touring skis.  Not big metal edge, but the kind of ski used for rental at a Nordic Center for track skiing.  My pair is 20 years old.  Junk skis are OK.  Steal mom's old no wax skis.
  • Clothing:  Expect everything from a snow storm to 100 degree weather.  Yes, it might snow.  Be prepared.  Bring gloves, hats, jackets, shorts, socks, tights, etc.  Have a small bag or pack to take with you each day.  Put a garbage bag in the bottom that can put your pack in if it rains.
  • Roller skis, a helmet and roller ski poles if you have them.  If you have roller skiing ferrules for your poles, you can change them here at our office.  If you don't have roller skis, don't worry, we have a limited amount of loaner roller skis and we'll work it out.
  • Roller ski clothes.  Bright, High Visibility stuff.  If you plan to take your shirt off you need a high visibility vest or shorts.  NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Roller skiing requires a helmet.  No exceptions.
  • Water Carrier.  Be prepared to carry water with you when we train.
  • Sun Screen,
  • Heart Rate Monitor
  • Post workout snacks.

Occupy Nordic.  We are going to repeat our Nordic Center barbeque and sleepover the last night of the Fire and Ice camp.  If you are driving in for camp, please bring a sleeping bag and pad.  If you are flying in, don't worry about it.  We'll find you a bag and pad through our skiers.

The first day of both camps the office will open at 7 AM if you need to scrape skis.  However, if you can, have your skis scraped and ready to go.  We will have a meeting inside the wax room at 8AM for both camps before heading to the mountain.

Our daily schedule will vary based on weather and other local issues.  More information will be available as we get closer to camp.

We will rotate coaches around during camps so everyone will work with everyone.

During lunch, skiers may leave for a while.  Some will stay to wax, watch video, etc.  Within walking distance we have Taco Del Mar, Safeway, Subway, McDonalds,  The Old Pancake House, Croutons, and for the parents, Cascade Lakes Brewing.  If you don't have a bag lunch we'll help people get to these places in groups.

I'll be posting pictures and updates to the MBSEF Nordic Facebook page.

In addition to coaches we have a few parents around who have volunteered to help.  Well use them some to keep track of kids.

Housing

These camps do not include housing.

MBSEF families do host PNSA and some flying in skiers for the Fire and Ice Camp.  Host housing is on a first come, first serve basis.  If you arrange host housing directly with an MBSEF family, please let dansimoneau@bendcable.com know so we don't double book a host.

Beyond host housing, some skiers come with families and while the kids ski the family rides bikes, paddle, ski, and do brewery tours.  Bend Oregon is an amazing place to vacation, especially in this season when you can ski and ride the same day without the heat and dust of later summer.  Sometimes teams get a house through bendvacationrentals.com or VRBO.com.  Town Place Suites is across the street from the MBSEF office which is convenient.

These are going to be great camps.  Call, text, or email if you have questions.
