MCASF Contractors discuss unlicensed activity problem with local media MCASF members Wade Helms, Edd Helms Group and Carlos Borja, Weathertrol Maintenance Corp., were among a small group of contractors interviewed by investigative reporter Jim DeFede from local CBS affiliate station 4 in Miami yesterday. The interview was part of Jim's investigation on unlicensed activity and abatement efforts in the area. Wade noted that he and Carlos emphasized that customers must take an active role in protecting themselves by ensuring that they only hire licensed contractors. The report will likely be aired in approximately one month as part of Jim's ongoing "Facing South Florida" program, which airs Sunday mornings. More information will be provided prior to airing the report.

MCASF Student Chapter Members attend
MCAA Student Chapter Summit
Students from MCASF's chapters at the University of Florida and Florida International University attended the MCAA Student Chapter Summit in Memphis last weekend. The highlight of the program - which the students reported made a big impression on them -- was an exclusive tour of the mechanical systems used to run the hospital, as well as a one-of-a-kind proton accelerator. The students also learned about the MCAA Student Chapter Competition, which includes some impressive grants for winners, who will be announced at the MCAA Convention next spring. MCASF student chapter liaison, Jose Ponce with member company Poole & Kent, said that he anticipates that the two chapters will make a strong showing in the competition.
The four students attending on behalf of their respective chapters were two students from Florida International University; Patricia Matthews, and Max Edrei, and two students from the University of Florida; Demetri Stamas and Keyon August. Demetri noted that "It was a great experience, and it made all of us excited to go back to our respective campuses and begin working on the competition. We definitely have our work cut out for us!" He added, "Not only did I learn a lot, I met a multitude of people that are more than willing to help me in advancing my career in mechanical contracting. The speakers taught on topics that were very relevant to the industry, which was great for me to be exposed to as a mechanical engineer. We look forward to getting started on the project!
