             DIVERSITY BY GOD

"Forget about deciding what's right for each other. Here's what you need to be concerned about: that you don't get in the way of someone else, making life more difficult than it already is. I'm convinced-Jesus convinced me!-that everything as it is in itself is holy."

                  ~Romans 14:13-14

God is a God of diversity.  God is a God of equality.  When Paul wrote his letter to the Romans, a more magnanimous spirt was growing in him.  He went on to write:  "Cultivate your own relationship with God, but don't impose it on others" (Romans 14:22).

The banner in our sanctuary announces MCCDC as a place with "Heart Raised High!"  My prayer is that MCCDC would be a place where we lift our joyful hearts in praise to God and in celebration of the friendships we share in community.  I also pray that the hearts we raise are hearts open wide to diversity, equality, and the brilliant differences designed by God.

With open hearts MCCDC has been planting seeds for Trans*Action Solidarity.  Last Sunday we prayed for our 10 delegates who participated in various events related to Transgender Lobby Day this past Tuesday (July 15).  Last night, Angel Collie, Lead of MCC Transgender Ministries, facilitated a Trans*Round Table conversation at MCCDC.  The conversation included how MCCDC can become more Trans* friendly and how we can provide a safe space for mutual growth and understanding related to Trans* empowerment.

Our worship this Sunday will continue the theme of Trans*Action as we recognize champions of Trans*Equality in our community and lift our open hearts in praise to God who has created each of us "awesomely and wonderfully" (Psalm 139:14).

I invite you to join me in welcoming Rev. Emma Chattin as our guest preacher this Sunday.  Her Spiritual Reflection is entitled: "Diversity by God! (inclusivity is up to us)."  A gifted preacher, she offered her first sermon at 15.  Her path to ministry was "derailed by a series of (wonderful!) Self-discoveries."   MCC opened a new path for her and she was ordained at MCC Richmond in 2004. She is a member of the MCC Eastern Network Team, co-leader of TransFormations, MCC of Northern Virginia's Trans*Ministry Group, and is the co-facilitator of two support groups: Second Friday, an open support group for Trans* individuals and their allies, and Fourth Fridays, a closed support group for the parents of Trans* children, tween, teens, and young adults.  Rev. Emma currently resides in Fairfax, Virginia with Heather James, her life-partner since 1997.

I'm looking forward to seeing you this Sunday at 9am and 11am for a great day of worship, music, information, inspiration and joy as we gather with open hearts.

Faithfully,

Rev. Dwayne

Fringe Festival

A LESBIAN BELLE TELLS. . .

The reviews are in and "A Lesbian Belle Tells. . ." is a hit.  Kim Moeller says Elizabeth McCain "tells of love and loss with a mix of pathos, playfulness, and sincerity."

Plan to attend this one-woman show written and performed by friend of MCCDC, Elizabeth McCain.   Shows are at the Goethe Institut-Main Stage at 812 7th Street NW and are available online at www.capitalfringefestival.org or at the venue 45 minutes before the show depending on availability. Opening night was a near sell out!

Out of the 175 shows in the Fringe Festival, this is the only lesbian solo show.  Elizabeth says, "In addition to OUTrageous stories about growing up as a Mississippi belle, and then coming out in DC and at family funerals, I also have some serious stories about healing from family estrangement and loss, that I think many LGBT folks will appreciate."  The show is directed by Tanya Taylor Rubinstein.

The four additional shows are tonight (July 17) at 6:30PM and July 20, 25 and 26.  I plan to attend the show on July 25th and hope to see you there. Since Capital Fringe features back-to-back shows, all productions end and begin on time.

Don't miss this charming, hilarious and poignant show!
