LOVE BEYOND ALL FEARS

MCCDC: THE PLACE TO BE

" Tested faith trains us to believe more in God's ability to give us life than our enemies' ability to extinguish it."
      ~Ayanna J. Watkins

This Sunday is the 8th day of the Great 50 Days of Easter, the spiritual countdown to Pentecost (June 4). Our scripture from John 20: 19-31 finds the disciples behind locked doors in fear that they are in danger because of their support for Jesus. It is the evening of the resurrection. They love Jesus, but they don't want to end up like him. In other words, their fear is greater than their love.

In the events surrounding Jesus, the disciples' faith and their love was facing a test, not from God, but from the dangerous socio-political circumstances swirling around them. Many of us today feel like we're facing something similar with the daily proliferation of hate speech, racist violence, and anti-immigrant discrimination. As we near June 12, memories of the Pulse shooting will trigger a range of responses.

These are dangerous times. And God is not testing us. Rather, God is standing with us in the test we are facing. Jesus stepped into the center of the disciples' fear with these words: "Peace be with you. As the Creator sent me, so I am sending you" (v. 21).   The peace of Jesus transformed their fear into love. They became messengers of good news.

This Sunday, we too will experience the presence of Jesus in our midst. Through the gift of the Spirit we will learn from the radical Rabbi who invites us to be messengers of love beyond all fears.

See you Sunday at 9 AM and 11 AM.

MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS!

I registered for the MCC Conference for People of African Descent,  Friends and Advocates (PAD).  This is the 9th PAD Conference.  Through the years, I have been challenged and inspired at these conferences.  I have received tools to help me be a better though imperfect advocate.  I have also made friendships that provide mutual nourishment to keep doing the difficult yet joyful work of justice.  I would like for at least twenty people from MCCDC to join me from August 3-5 in St. Louis.

RECYCLING is COMING!!

Throughout the Bible God teaches that we are stewards of our world. To be better stewards, MCCDC will soon begin recycling. Until we roll out a full-blown recycling program, we are asking everyone to do two things. First, we generate a lot of paper waste like left behind bulletins, newspapers and magazines. Please take these items home with you to recycle. Second, DC outlawed styrofoam in 2014. We appreciate people contributing cups and plates to the church, yet to be in compliance with the regulation we cannot accept styrofoam items any longer. If you want to contribute, please bring paper items-better yet buy ones that contain recycled material already! Thank you so much for your generosity and spirit of service
