News: Gun Violence Prevention & MCMS
Thank You to the 138 Members Who Responded to the Survey
88.41% of our member respondents said that gun violence is a public health issue, and 80.43% said that MCMS should be involved in some manner. MCMS staff shared these responses, including individual member comments with our Executive Board last Tuesday night, along with existing policy from the AMA and MedChi.

MCMS Board of Directors Takes Action
The MCMS Executive Board voted unanimously in favor of sending two resolutions on the topic of gun violence prevention to MedChi's House of Delegates, which meets on April 29th.

The first resolution advocates for the lifting of the current ban on CDC gun violence research and the second would initiate an interdisciplinary task force at MedChi for the prevention of gun violence in Maryland, including a review of current AMA policy, current Maryland legislation, and to determine whether additional state legislation, public affairs campaigns or physician and patient education are needed.

Other News Regarding Gun Violence Prevention
The omnibus bill passed by congress this week clarifies that the Dickey Amendment does not bar the CDC from conducting research on gun violence. It does not, however, repeal the amendment which states that "none of the funds made available. . . may be used, in whole or in part, to advocate or promote gun control." It also does not provide dedicated funding for research on gun violence prevention. Read more. . .
