"Building a firm foundation through Christ-centered education"

"Emmanuel Shall Come To Thee"

The instrumental music students did an amazing job of blessing their audience with their hard work from the past 11 weeks. They poured out their hearts in song to the Lord. Bravo to our instrumentalists grades 4-8. You are amazing and we love you!
Safe and Secure School Environment

Please take a moment to read the important security measures we are taking for the safety or all.

School Entrance:  You may have noticed some of the new equipment around the front entrance.  We've added some features to our lobby security system, including an entry camera and buzzer system.  As a next step in school safety, we can now keep our main entrance doors locked throughout the school day, an additional layer of student security.

Beginning Monday, January 9th, our exterior lobby doors will remain locked at all times.   When you come to school, please plan to use the intercom pad located to the right of the main doors. Visitors will be buzzed in by either the receptionist or front office staff.  All other existing visitor and carpool procedures will remain unchanged.  Thank you for your cooperation as we seek to provide a safe and secure school environment.
Annual Fund Update

As we announced to students today, to-date over 100 families have pledged their support to MCS's Annual Fund Campaign: Made to Glorify!  Thank you! Each and every gift matters, and together they enable MCS to continue providing the highest level of academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment to students.  We ask that each MCS family prayerfully consider how you can be involved in building the future at MCS.  Our goal is 100% Family Participation by December 31, 2016!

From the entire faculty and staff, thank you for your prayerful consideration.

Elementary Chapel - Christmas Traditions

Mrs. Nakamoto

Mrs. Harding

Mrs. Drevlow

Christmas is a time of year that is filled with special traditions to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Traditions mark us and help us tell the Nativity story or bind us together as a family. Our elementary students heard from a few faculty about traditions that are part of their families: Mrs. Mazaika (yearly ornaments), Mr. Lucas (a big family Christmas), Mrs. Harding (hunting for fossils), Mrs. Drevlow (gingerbread cookies), Mrs. Moore (family music video), Mrs. Nakamoto (O Holy Night).

Family conversation in the car or at dinner: Have your child tell you about a tradition that was shared in chapel, and then tell your child about one from your childhood.

Elementary Chapel was led this week by 4th Grade students in Mrs. Moore's General Music Class.

Family CommUNITY Connection Newsletter

 Happy December, MCS Families!

This month our Family CommUNITY Connection newsletter is centered around "Preparing Him Room."  There are so many "good things" to be enjoyed and celebrated over this holiday season.  But, the saying "good is the enemy of best" might be most true for the month of December as all of these good things can leave very little space for the very best thing our souls need.

We encourage you to carve out time in your December to celebrate Advent as a family (see the attached newsletter for an Advent tradition inspiration) and engage in meaningful conversation around the table.

Blessings,

Giving Back to Our Community
Shalimar, Costa Mesa

Last Friday, 23 students were thrilled to share their time building friendships across cultures, making crafts, playing, and exalting the name of Jesus together with the Shalimar community here in Costa Mesa. Our students loved every minute of the experience, including preparing the crafts ahead of time and spending their afternoon in the neighborhood.  Praise the Lord for the goodness that is coming out of relationships being formed here!

Middle School December Chapels

We want to take a moment to highlight our past 2 Middle School Chapels, as they have both been extremely impactful to our students

Laura Niebaum,from CIFT
On December 15th,  Laura Niebaum  joined us from CIFT (Center for Individual and Family Therapy).  Laura is a licensed teen marriage and family therapist, who specializes in adolescents, young adults, and families. She spoke specifically to our students about worry, how damaging worry can be for a middle school student, and offered some tactics on how to decompress in the moment when we feel worry begin to take over.  Laura spoke to our students in way that they could relate to, and many stated that it was a message they needed to hear.

If you feel that you have further questions regarding worry for your child/children, Laura asked us to share her email address so that you can contact her at any time at [email protected]   .

MCS Mom & International Speaker, Christine Caine.
This past Monday our middle school was blessed to have MCS mom and renown international speaker  Christine Caine  as our guest. The students hung on her every word as she brought God's Truth through experience, wisdom, and humor. Christine challenged our students to know that their identity is in Christ alone, and that they are not too young for God to work in and through their lives. She shared that God both anoints and appoints imperfect people to do His work, just look at the life of David!

Ask your child to describe her analogy of the dark room. Most were shocked to hear that it once took 2 weeks to view the photos taken on a camera!

What a treat for all of us in chapel on Monday.

Middle School Skate Party

The MCS middle school took over Fountain Valley Skate Center on Monday afternoon, and brought every bit of their Dollar Dress Day Christmas cheer!  We had everything from experienced skaters to some who laced up roller skates for the very first time out there in the skating rink. There was no shortage of fun, smiles, and laughter that afternoon. While the bruises are temporary, the memories made will last a lifetime!  Thank you to all students who participated (and parents who drove them).

We raised over $500 toward our Gulu Goal of helping Christ the Center Ministries build a chapel in Gulu, Uganda!

Tacky Christmas Sweater Day

The middle school students were challenged to bring Tacky Christmas to MCS, and they answered the call!  There were tacky Christmas sweaters, festive hats, accessories that light up, and red and green galore! It certainly made for a cheery day on our campus!  The highly sought after Dollar Dress Day Trophy for December was awarded to Mrs. Knight's 6th grade class, with honorable mentions going to Mrs. Bryant's, Ms. Becker's, and Ms. Green's homerooms.

Private School Entrance Exam Review Sessions
for MCS 8th Grade Students

We are offering four review sessions to help our MCS 8th grade students prepare for private school entrance exams, specifically the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). Math and English will be reviewed in each session. All four sessions will be different, so we recommend you attend all four. Students are encouraged to purchase the HSPT or ISEE test books available at Barnes and Nobel or online. Any version of the HSPT or ISEE test book is fine. This book is recommended, not required.

Students may attend any or all of the following sessions:
  • Tuesday, December 13th (3:00 - 4:30)
  • Tuesday, December 20th (3:00 - 4:30)
  • Tuesday, January 10th (3:00 - 4:30)
  • Tuesday, January 17th (3:00 - 4:30)
Location: Meet in Mrs. Thurston's room at the start of each session

The sessions are long, but are designed to allow review of both Math and English. We will also provide a short snack break. These sessions should provide a good stretching of our students' "test endurance." Generally, entrance exam testing periods are three to fours hours in length. Most middle school students are not used to sitting and testing for so long!

All four sessions are included in the $40 fee. Your FACTS account will be billed after the first session you attend.

Please RSVP to [email protected] if your child will be attending any sessions.

***Please let us know if you'd like to donate snack items for these review sessions. It would be much appreciated by the hungry students.

Middle School Photography Club
Meets Thursdays During Lunch in Mrs. Thurston's Room

Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who are interested in being part of this club must attend the meeting.

Students do not need to be a member of the photography elective to join.

Please contact Mrs. Thurston at [email protected] if you have questions.
Student Success Center

Did you know the middle school has a Student Success Center? The goal of SSC is to support students in achieving academic goals by providing homework help and strengthening skills in organization, time management, and test preparation. We want to teach students strategies that will help them achieve success in both their academic careers and for the rest of their lives beyond MCS. Students who want to take advantage of this tremendous resource can stop by the SSC located upstairs next to the administration office to meet Mrs. Willis, receive more information, and sign up for the after school help. The SSC is open to students during the following times:
  • Monday: 3:00-3:30
  • Tuesday: 3:00-3:30
  • Thursday-3:00-3:30
To provide the best support, it is imperative students sign up prior to attending. We are excited to provide this great resource to our students and are thrilled to work with students throughout the year!
