On Wednesday, May 9, students, families, and staff from Francis Parker School No. 23 will take the classroom into the community by participating in National Bike to School Day. The ride will start at 7:00 a.m. at the Rochester Museum and Science Center and end at School No. 23 at 7:45 a.m. with coffee and breakfast treats. This event supports the District's efforts to to provide schools with Expanded Learning opportunities.
Rochester Police Deputy Chief LeRon Singletary and members of the RPD Bike Patrol will join bikers in the ride while also providing a police escort. Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams and members of her Executive Cabinet will also join in the ride.
The first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Almost 1,000 local events in 49 states and the District of Columbia joined together to encourage children to safely bicycle or walk to school.
The event builds on the popularity of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October. National Bike to School Day provides an opportunity for schools across the country to join together to celebrate and to build off of the energy of National Bike Month.
