MENA Clean Energy Month in Review
CEBC News

Roundup by the CEO
Dear Members and Colleagues,

This month Saudi Arabia issued a request for qualifications for the kingdom's first large-scale wind project in the Al Jouf region totalling 400MW. There are plans for further tenders this year as part of a US$50 billion spending program on renewables within six years. The National Energy Services Company, NESCO, Saudi Arabia's Super ESCO has started its operations with the launch of a first public building retrofit tender in Riyadh.

Bahrain appointed a technical engineering firm to support its Sustainable Energy Unit to develop the technical and regulatory requirements related to connecting distributed renewable energy resources into Bahrain's national electricity grid. This is in line with the Country's targets to achieve 6% national electrical energy efficiency by 2025 and a 5% contribution from renewable energies by 2025, rising to 10 per cent by 2035.

Construction began on a 30MW PV Project in Iran's North Khorasan Province. The plant will be the largest in Iran and follows completion of two 7MW installations and a 10MW site earlier this year.

Solar distributed generation made its entry in Lebanon with the installation of a 600kw rooftop PV array completed under Lebanon's Small Decentralised Renewable Energy Power Generation Scheme, while IFC approved an investment of $635m to help construct, operate and maintain up to 11 solar power plants in Egypt.

CEBC's next event is a webinar on the Challenges of Solar Dispatchability in August, followed by a breakfast briefing focusing on clean energy finance: Green Sukuk & Bonds, and Debt and Equity Crowdfunding for cleantech projects in MENA in September.

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and wish you a great month ahead.

With more solar electricity entering the grid at record low prices, the future of energy is renewable. But as more peak load electricity enters the system, batteries and storage become essential for load shifting and to maintain the integrity of the grid.  But what are the most promising technologies developing that allow grids to manage energy loads? Will the solution be maximizing one of those technologies or building new technologies?

This webinar analyses in depth thermal storage, cool storage and batteries among other technologies; different approaches to resolve the same challenge of shifting energy from when it is produced to when it is needed - at the lowest possible cost.  This webinar is free to attend.   REGISTER HERE

Solar investment 'firm' in Q2 2017 boosted by UAE parks
PV investment was up 20% from the first quarter of this year, and 19% up on the same quarter last year. A major part of the increase was due to the US$1.9 billion financing of two giant solar PV parks in the Middle East, the 800MW Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum III plant in Dubai, and the 1.2GW Marubeni JinkoSolar and Adwea Sweihan project in Abu Dhabi. Both parks have seen significant funding news this summer. [Read More]

Energy Yield of Photovoltaic Modules and Systems
Photovoltaic (PV) systems need to generate reliable and safe power throughout their predicted life time of more than 25 years of operation while being subjected to a wide range of environmental conditions, sometimes even extreme conditions. But as solar module prices continue to fall, today's PV systems also have to be economically viable in the light of current developments in the PV module market. Investors are constantly looking for assurances that the module technology they are planning to finance will in fact produce the expected energy yield and reward their investment.

Regular Insurance Insights Designed for the Renewables Industry provided by Lockton

Don't fall into any holes in cover created during your project's transition from construction to operation
An insurance policy is nothing other than "a promise" - a promise to pay a sum of money if a set of circumstances happen, usually an event of damage. Unfortunately, all insurance policies have "small print" that has to be read carefully, although with proper advice it is possible to avoid (or at least understand) most of the challenges that may arise from this. Renewables 2017: Global Status Report
The year 2016 saw several developments and ongoing trends that all have a bearing on renewable energy, including the continuation of comparatively low global fossil fuel prices; dramatic price declines of several renewable energy technologies; and a continued increase in attention to energy storage. For the third consecutive year, global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and industry were nearly flat in 2016, due largely to declining coal use worldwide but also due to improvements in energy efficiency and to increasing the use of renewable energy.

The Geopolitics of Renewable Energy: Faculty Research Working Paper Series
For a century, the geopolitics of energy has been synonymous with the geopolitics of oil and gas. However, geopolitics and the global energy economy are both changing. The international order predominant since the end of World War II faces mounting challenges. At the same time, renew- able energy is growing rapidly. Nevertheless, the geopolitics of renewable energy has received relatively little attention, especially when considering the far-reaching consequences of a global shift to renewable energy.  [Download Report]

The Growing Role of Minerals and Metals for a Low Carbon Future
Climate and greenhouse gas (GHG) scenarios have typically paid scant attention to the metal implications necessary to realize a low/zero carbon future. The 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change indicates a global resolve to embark on development patterns that would significantly be less GHG intensive. One might assume that nonrenewable resource development and use will also need to decline in a carbon-constrained future.
