2012 State of the City Luncheon ForumRSVP for the annual State of the City Luncheon - July 12

 

The Chamber's 2012 State of the City Luncheon Forum will be held on Tuesday, July 10 at the Bakersfield Marriott at the Convention Center. Registration and networking begin at 11:30 a.m. with the luncheon and program from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.

 

Join the Chamber in welcoming Mayor Harvey Hall; City Manager Alan Tandy; and Bakersfield Convention & Visitors Bureau Manager David Lyman; as we take a look at the past year and what's ahead for the City of Bakersfield. Mayor Hall will give his annual update on the Mayor's activities on behalf of our community. City Manager Alan Tandy will provide a general overview of city projects and budget status and Thomas Road Improvement Program update. David Lyman will give an update on the Convention and Visitors Bureau and speak about attracting events to Bakersfield.

 

The annual State of the City Luncheon Forum is an important business leadership forum for our community. Reserve your seats today!

Kern No. 1 in the Nation for Manufacturing Job Gains

Kern County had the highest rate of manufacturing job gains during the past year, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

 

Between April 2011 and April 2012, Kern saw an increase of 1,800 manufacturing jobs, a 13.74% gain. That was the largest rate of increase among the nation's top 100 metro areas. The only other big California metros with large percentage gains in manufacturing jobs were Stockton (No. 5, 8.98%) and Fresno (No 18, 4.39%).

 

The nation's 100 biggest metropolitan areas added 98,900 manufacturing jobs during the same period. Manufacturing employment increased in 62 of the top 100 metros during the past year, with the biggest raw gains occurring in Seattle (up 12,600), Houston (up 9,000), Detroit (up 8,600) and Cincinnati (up 8,300).

Kern No. 4 in the Nation for Rate of Private Sector Job Growth

Kern County had the third highest rate of private sector job growth in California, and the fourth highest in the nation. The 100 major metros added a total of 1.05 million private-sector jobs between April 2011 and the same month this year, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

 

During that twelve month period, 6,400 new private sector jobs were added in Kern, a 3.75% increase. Topping the list was Stockton, followed by Houston and San Jose.

The local doctor and world renown speaker will provide helpful tools for living in optimum wellness - with the challenges of PTSD. The event will be held Monday, June 25, at 6:00 p.m. at 5251 Office Park Drive Suite 200. On Thursday, May 10 Aera Energy LLC became the first company in Bakersfield to move toward zero waste by including food composting in their headquarters recycling program. Aera launched an effort aimed at achieving the environmental strategy known as "zero waste." Mayor Harvey Hall and Linda Hartman, executive director of Bakersfield ARC Foundation, helped to launch the zero waste effort for Aera's headquarters facility with a ribbon cutting ceremony during the company's Health, Safety and Green Fair.

 

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County is proud to announce a grant award from Pacific Gas and Electric Company in the amount of $5,000 to support the Robo Tech Program at the Boys & Girls Club - Armstrong Youth Center. The Robo Tech Program is an easy and fun way for Club members to explore science, technology, engineering and math and ultimately improve their school grades. Using Lego Mindstorms� - a self-contained kit that provides an introduction to robotics - members, working in groups, use the kits and tutorials to build and program a robot that interacts with its environment in numerous ways.

San Joaquin Community Hospital's (SJCH) Marketing Department has won a total of 11 national marketing awards for its work in 2011. The awards were distributed by the Aster Awards and the Healthcare Marketing Report, both national competitions and both entities considered among the foremost authorities on judging excellence in healthcare marketing. SJCH received six Aster Awards, four of which were "Gold," and five Healthcare Marketing Report awards.
