This newsletter is packed full of information about your community - so dig in and get the big picture of what is happening here in Mableton. Mark your calendar now for MIC's Annual Community Meeting set for March 31 at 7pm at the South Cobb Community Center. We will be looking ahead to the year to come and conducting elections for the MIC Board of Directors too.

Board elections are a key aspect of MIC membership. Members in good standing who live in Mableton are eligible to run for the Board and to vote in the election. Be sure to renew your membership now - or if you are not a member, this is a great time to join MIC. It's quick, easy and secure on our website. Annual memberships are just $10 per person.

And speaking of elections, the Presidential Primary is set for March 1st and Advance Voting voting   has begun.  Read the article below for information about voting here in Mableton next week.

MIC Opens Applications for New Board Members
Applications Due March 4th
Do you have a passion for Mableton, a willingness to learn even more about our community, an interest in working with people, and the time to commit to monthly Board meetings, committee meetings and projects? If the answer is "Yes" and if you are a MIC member and live in Mableton, please consider joining the MIC Board.  The rewards are many - new friends and connections in the community, a sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that you are making our world just a little bit better.
  
Applications for the 2-year terms beginning in April are due March 4th, so act now! We will have some open seats this year, and we are eager to welcome new Board members with new ideas and perspectives. Click  here to submit a nomination.

Board members are not compensated financially for their MIC service; we are all volunteers. The Board is responsible for overseeing MIC operations, finances, determining MIC positions on zoning cases, appointing MIC officers, modifying bylaws, and listening to the community as we formulate MIC policies and projects. Each MIC Board member is expected to chair a committee or lead a project of his or her choosing.

VotingVote in the Presidential Primary!
Advance Voting Underway Now
The Presidential Primary in Georgia is set for March 1st, but Advance Voting began on Vote graphic February 8th at a few select locations. Advance Voting will come to Mableton the week of Monday through Friday, February 22nd through 26th at the South Cobb Community Center on Lions Club Drive in Mableton. Any registered Cobb County voter can vote at any location during Advance Voting. No voting is available on Monday, February 29th.

On March 1st -- Election Day -- registered voters must go to their home precinct in order to cast their vote. Not sure where that is? Check out My Voter Page now. On March 1st, the polls will be open from 7am to 7pm.

The deadline for registering to vote in the Presidential Primary has passed, but you can still register to vote in the Georgia Primary election (U.S. Congress, state legislature, county commission, judges and other local offices). Community Meetings with Commissioner Cupid
Code Amendments and State of the District Address
On Thursday, February 18th at 6:30pm, Commissioner Cupid will present her annual Cupid State of the District address at the Riverside Epicenter at  135 Riverside Parkway, Austell. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

On Wednesday, February 24th at 6pm, the Commissioner will join with Planning Commissioner Galt Porter for a Community Zoning Meeting. This monthly event will be held at the South Cobb Community Center, 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton. It is a great opportunity to voice your thoughts about zoning applications right here in our community.

Grant Funds Available for Non-Profits
Meetings on February 23rd and 25th
All nonprofit organizations with a 501c3 designation serving Cobb County residents are Money invited to attend a presentation on the availability of funds from the Cobb County Non-Profit Grant program. An overview of the funding process, including criteria for receiving a grant and instructions on completing the application, will be provided. Applications will be available on the Cobb Collaborative website after the last session.  Two meetings will be held:
  • February 23rd 9 to 11am  at Riverside EpiCenter, 135 Riverside Parkway, Austell.
  • February 25th 9 to 11am at Cumberland Community Church, 3110 Sports Avenue SE, Smyrna. 

Staff from the Cobb Collaborative and Cobb County Finance Department will be present to answer questions regarding the application and review process.  Attendance at one of the two meetings is mandatory for applicants.


Citizens Public Safety Academy 
Applications due February 26th
Applications are being accepted for the spring session of the Cobb County Citizens cobb county logo Public Safety Academy Program. This 14-week program is an opportunity for county residents to gain an insiders' understanding of the organizations that comprise the Department of Public Safety. Participants will learn how the police, fire, animal control and 911 departments are organized and operate. Participants will tour the 911 Communications Center and the Medical Examiner's Office and learn more about weapons and firearms safety, defensive tactics and special operations teams, such as hazardous materials and heavy rescue squad.

In order to participate, people should be at least 21 years old and either live in Cobb County or work for Cobb County government or schools. Applicants must fill out an application, print it and bring it in person to Cobb Public Safety Internal Affairs Department, 1150 Powder Springs St., Suite 300, Marietta. Applications are due by 4pm, Friday, February 26th. Bring your driver's license, because a copy is needed for the application process.

The academy will begin on March 8th at 6pm at the Cobb County Public Safety Training Academy, 219 Valor Drive, Marietta. For more information, contact Renee Cameron at 770-590-5650.

Celebrate Black History Month at Cobb Libraries
Mableton Events
Celebrate Black History Month at a unique event which will explore the food contributions of early African Americans. "Food History of African Americans in the South" will be held from 7 to 8pm, Wednesday, February 17th at the South Cobb Regional Library here in Mableton.  You will explore foods that were brought to America on slave ships and how slaves survived on these foods after they arrived. You will also see how we still eat many of the same foods, sample healthy dishes and take home some recipes for better living.  The program will be presented by Cobb Extension Service's Terri Carter. Terri is also the leader of MIC's Community Garden.

On Saturday, February 27th from 1 to 3pm, illustrator R. Gregory Christie  will discuss the life of Bass Reeves, US Marshall and many other "Cowboys of Color."  Bass Reeves was brought to life in the wonderful illustrations Mr. Christie drew for the book, "Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, US Marshall" by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson. After the presentation, Mr. Christie will help participants create their own "Badge of Distinction".  This is a family event and kids of all ages are invited.

Mable House Arts Center News
Classes, Exhibits and Theatre
Register now for Spring classes at the Mable House Arts Center! From pottery to Mable House Arts Center digital photography, toddlers to seniors - there is a class for you and everyone in your family. Check out the Canvas and Cocktails, Mad Hatters Tea Party and other special events. View the entire course offering and then register online.

In the gallery at the Mable House Arts Center is the South Cobb Arts Alliance's Members Exhibit. Take a minute to come by and see the paintings, sculpture, photography and other media created by local artists. It's a great chance to experience the eclectic and interesting community we share together. The exhibit runs through February 24th and the gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 10am to 5pm; call (770) 819-3285 for evening and weekend hours. Admission is free.

Get your tickets now for Mary Poppins, a production of The Theatre Project showcasing our community's great young talent. Tickets will go on sale at The Arts Center, The Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre Box office and Ticketmaster March 4th beginning at 10am for performances in April. Tickets are $8 for adults; children 12 and under are free. Tables that seat six are $60. Click here for more information.
