MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

August 15, 2014

From the President...

Well, it's back to school time in our area and I am sure that both parents and kids are excited and challenged as we all adjust to the new schedules. We want to thank those groups and individuals among you who have generously donated back to school items to children at Harmony Leland as well as the other Mableton area schools. It is a wonderful way to support your neighbors!

Also we want to lift up our sister organization, the South Cobb Arts Alliance, and Cobb County Parks and Recreation and their recent Food Truck events on the grounds of the Mable House and Arts Center complex. The food was great and the weather on these past two evenings that they have held them could not have cooperated any better. Families set up chairs and spread blankets and enjoyed the company and the stylings of our local musicians. Please stay tuned for news as to any future food truck events....

For those who are looking to get involved in the community, we have the Adopt-a-Mile event this Saturday morning as well as available plots in the Historic Mableton Community Garden; both of which are discussed in more detail in the articles below.

Finally, MIC will be holding some public meetings this coming Fall and so please be on the lookout for the dates and times for those.

There is a lot happening here in Mableton, now and in the next few weeks. Give me a call @ (404) 550-0475 or send me an email - I'm always ready to talk about Mableton!

Sincerely,

Adopt-a-Mile
Saturday August 16th, 9:00am

Last month's scheduled cleanup was rained out, so we've rescheduled for August 16th,AAM 2013 starting promptly at 9:00am. We will meet in front of the Pizza Hut in front of the Publix shopping center on Floyd Road. With the Floyd Road improvement project nearly complete, we will return to the segment between the Post Office and the old Rite Aid store where Floyd and Hicks Roads intersect. It's been almost two years since we left due to construction.

It takes only about an hour for MIC volunteers to pick up the accumulated trash and it's an hour well spent! Floyd Road will look a whole lot better when we are done. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring gloves if you like. We provide latex gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bottled water -- and a warm welcome.

For more information, contact Dave McDaniel.

Fall Gardening Tips
From Historic Mableton Community Garden

Wow, can you believe that the summer has come and gone already especially as far as the garden is concerned?  The tomato plants are starting to brown and wither and the squash plants are drying up, but no worries.  The new fall garden will bring back life and beauty for a bountiful harvest before Thanksgiving. That is, if you get started right now.  Fall gardening is full of possibilities. You can start seeds now and expect to be eating some of those greens soon.  Fall is time to plant lettuce, kale, collards, turnips, spinach, carrots, beets, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and most any other green leafy vegetable. Don't forget to add in some organic matter and fertilizer before you plant especially if you had a summer garden in the same spot.

If you would like to join the Historic Mableton Community Garden, we still have a few plots available.  We can teach you as you go, so get that pack of seeds and get planting.  For more information on gardening or to join the garden, contact Farmer Terri at [email protected]

Mableton Farmers Market Keeps Rolling Until September 4th
Thursdays, 8:30am to 12:30pm

Market produce supply and variety is peaking thanks to the addition of a small farmer veggies vendor and excellent crop growing conditions.  The Market also offers hand-made soaps, craft items and fresh-cut flowers. And there's a Kids Corner for the little ones.

Wholesome Wave Georgia continues to match Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly food stamps) purchases. The match enables SNAP customers to double their spending power for fresh produce and other eligible food purchases. At the same time, eligible food vendors double their sales. Please help spread the word through your civic and/or church groups to those in need.

Visit with Farmer Terri for new ideas on cooking up something simple and nutritious to eat. Come and get your free sample.

The Market is located at the Mable House Complex, 5239 Floyd Road in Mableton.  Questions?  Contact Dave McDaniel, MIC's Market Manager.
