Adopt A Mile Clean-up on Floyd Road
Saturday, Feburary 6th at 9am
The snow was too much! We had to postpone our first Adopt-a-Mile of 2016 until this coming Saturday, February 6th. We will meet in the Kroger Shopping Center parking lot area adjacent to the Autobell Car Wash on Floyd Road and start promptly at 9am.  Autobell will host this event and will provide refreshments for those who "finish the course".
With the first phase of the Floyd Road improvement project complete with the added medians, it's a bigger job than before, so your help will be greatly appreciated.  It ta kes only about an hour for MIC volunteers to pick up the accumulated trash and it's an hour well-spent! Floyd Road will look a whole lot better when we are done. Wear a warm coat, sturdy shoes or boots and bring gloves if you like. We provide latex gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bottled water - and a warm welcome.

Please contact Dave McDaniel if you plan to participate or if you have any questions/concerns.  If we know you're coming, we'll keep you posted in case of inclement weather.

Celebrate Black History Month at Cobb Libraries
Mableton and Marietta Events
Celebrate Black History Month at a unique event which will explore the food contributions of early African Americans. "Food History of African Americans in the South" will be held 7 to 8pm, Wednesday, February 10th, at the Switzer Library and 7 to 8pm, Wednesday, February 17th at the South Cobb Regional Library here in Mableton.

You will explore foods that were brought to America on slave ships and how slaves survived on these foods after they arrived. You will also see how we still eat many of the same foods, but with a healthy twist. Learn how herbs can take the place of salt in seasoning dishes and join the cooking demonstration to sample healthy dishes and take home some recipes for better living.

The program will be presented by Cobb Extension Service's Terri Carter. Terri is also the leader of MIC's Community Garden.

No registration is required for this event. Switzer Library is located at 266 Roswell St., Marietta. South Cobb Regional Library is located at 805 Clay Road, Mableton. For more information, click here.

Zoning News
Coming Up in February and March...
At the request of  Elite Auto Collision,  the Board of Commissioners postponed their zoning sign small hearing on the request  to allow an auto body shop at 380 Veterans Memorial Highway, SE  (OB-57). The MIC Board voted to oppose this request and neighbors in the Allen Road/Lakeshore area circulated a petition in opposition, as well. The hearing is expected to be on February 16th at 9am before the Board of Commissioners.

Atlanta Safety Brake has requested rezoning of their property at 5756 Sydney Anne Court (Z-3) from General Commercial to Neighborhood Retail Commercial. The MIC Zoning Committee worked with the applicant's attorney to secure some stipulations and as a result, the MIC Board voted to remain neutral in this case. The expected tenant for this property builds movie sets and MIC welcomes another successful business to our community.

Unique International Auto, LLC has filed an application to rezone their property at 5835 Powell Drive (Z-4) from R-20 to Heavy Industrial for used car sales, auto storage yard and offices. A special land use permit application (SLUP-1) has also been submitted for the used car sales and auto storage. The MIC Board voted to oppose this application because the property is located in a Neighborhood Activity Center (NAC) and is too small for such an intense use. We expect the hearing to be postponed until March 1st.

Aldridge Grading and Trucking Co. is requesting rezoning for 86 Veterans Memorial Highway (Z-5) from R-20 to Light Industrial for continued use by their grading business. The MIC Board voted to oppose this application because it would expand a light industrial type use in an NAC. Additionally, the property is close to a thriving day care center and Lindley Middle School. We expect that this hearing will be postponed until March 1st.

Diamond Roofing Company would like to rezone 5827 Powell Drive (Z-7) from R-20 to Light Industrial. The MIC Zoning Committee worked with the applicant's attorney to obtain improvements to this property and appropriate limitations for this small parcel located in an NAC. The MIC Board voted to remain neutral.

The owners of Hilltop Shopping Center (Z-11) applied to rezone this property at 1391 Veterans Memorial Highway to Light Industrial for a climate-controlled self-storage facility. Presently, the shopping center appears to be vacant except for a dollar store. The MIC Zoning Committee has met with the applicant's representative and recently learned that the applicant will request a postponement until the Planning Commissioner hearing on March 1st.

The KOK warehouse at 281 Veterans Memorial Highway (Z-14) is the subject of an application for rezoning to Light Industrial. MIC has learned that this applicant will request a postponement until the March 1st Planning Commissioner hearing.

At the corner of Mableton Parkway and Factory Shoals Road (Z-17), the owner of the small restaurant on the corner and the strip center housing Webb's Cleaners has applied for rezoning to Neighborhood Retail Commercial zoning.  MIC has requested some improvements to the appearance of the property.
