MABLETON IMPROVEMENT COALITION

NEWSLETTER

November 1, 2014

From the President...

Early voting turnout was strong last week here in South Cobb, but the big day is next Tuesday, November 4th.  If you have not already voted early, be sure to vote at your precinct on Tuesday between 7am and 7pm.  Unlike early voting, you can vote only at your precinct.  Save time and worry - click here to locate your precinct so you can go directly there on Tuesday.

Exercising your right to vote is critically important. Voters will be selecting a Governor, U.S. Senator, State School Superintendent, the entire State legislature, a Cobb County school board member and weighing in on many ballot questions, including the continuation of the SPLOST. (More on the SPLOST below.) Please vote all the way down the ballot - do not vote simply for the first two or three offices. Every vote counts!

If you want to talk about voting or any other issue affecting Mableton, give me a call @ (404) 550-0475 or send me an email. I'm always ready to talk about Mableton!

Sincerely,

SPLOST 2016 up for a Vote
Continuation of 1% Sales Tax

The 2016 SPLOST referendum will be on the November ballot. If approved, shoppers will not notice a difference in sales tax at the cash register because the 2016 SPLOST will begin just as the current SPLOST ends. The SPLOST is a 1% sales tax that funds capital improvements, such as police and fire equipment, roads, sidewalks, trails, parks and libraries. For the County's complete list of projects proposed for the 2016 SPLOST, click here.

For a one page summary prepared by MIC, click here.  Of direct benefit to Mableton are these projects included in the 2016 SPLOST:
  • New Fire Station to replace one on Mableton Parkway near Veterans Memorial Highway intersection
  • Improvements to Mable House Complex
  • Development of Chattahoochee River Line parks
  • Improvements to South Cobb Regional Library in Mableton
  • Replacement bridges for Brookwood Drive at Clay Branch and James Road over Pine Creek
  • Roundabout at Hicks and Concord Roads in lieu of turn lanes
  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Improvements, including sidewalks and transit stops
  • Silver Comet bridge repairs
  • Improvements to Oakdale, Dickerson and Riverview Roads
MIC Community Meeting
November 11th at 7pm

MIC will host its final Community Meeting of the Year on November 11th at 7pm at the South Cobb Community Center at 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton.  The meeting will focus on nonprofit and faith-based organizations that work to improve our community. We will also kick off MIC's holiday projects - Secret Santa and Mable's Tea Room.

MIC is supporting Sweetwater Mission in its work to prevent hunger and homelessness in our community.   We ask that everyone coming to the Community Meeting bring a personal hygiene item -- shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant or bath soap --  to donate to Sweetwater Mission for distribution to their clients.

Plan now to attend this meeting and bring a friend or neighbor.  Come and get connected to your community.  Contact Joel Cope for more information.

Zoning News
In October....
zoning sign small

Mt. Harmony Baptist Church at 561 Veterans Memorial Highway (Z-67) was granted rezoning to a commercial category, so that they can install an electronic sign.

In November...

Nature's Supply Center (Z-80) at 4419 Floyd Road has filed an application for Light Industrial Zoning for their business adjacent to the Silver Comet Trail.  The MIC Board voted to ask that alternatives to the industrial zoning be considered because the property is adjacent to the Silver Comet Trail and the soon-to-be-built Floyd Road Trail.

In December...

An application has been filed for a subdivision on Old Alabama Road (Z-86) on property surrounding New Harvest Baptist Church.  See the article below for information about an upcoming community meeting on this application.

Community Meeting about New Subdivision

Owners of the property around New Harvest Baptist Church at 1337 Old Alabama Road are planning a new subdivision.  Everyone is invited to attend a community meeting at the church on Thursday, November 13th at 7pm to learn more about the development.

The application submitted by Zero One LLC calls for 43 homes on the 18-acre parcel.  The application will be heard by the Planning Commission on December 2nd in Marietta. Be a Secret Santa for the Boys & Girls Club
Annual MIC Holiday Project
Each year, MIC partners with the A.W. "Tony" Mathews Boys and Girls Club in Mableton to provide Christmas gifts for the children at our local club.  The Secret Santa program helps more than 50 children with their Christmas wishes each holiday season.

MIC members and friends who participate will receive the child's wish list, including favorite toys, clothing sizes and other needs. It is suggested that each sponsor spend approximately $50 per child. If you want to spend more, you can be a Secret Santa for more than one child.

If you would like to be a Secret Santa, please email Janis Stevenson.  We are grateful for the community support in years past and look forward to hearing from you again.

MIC Volunteers at Mable's Tea Room
Friday and Saturday, December 5th and 6th
For the last several years, MIC volunteers have "adopted" Mable's Tea Room, providing Tea Room volunteers and homemade cakes and soups for this wonderful Mableton tradition.  In return, the South Cobb Arts Alliance, which sponsors the event, makes a donation to MIC.  The Tea Room has become an important fundraiser for MIC as well as a chance to serve our friends and neighbors.

Many of our volunteers from last year will be returning, but we do have some volunteer spaces left -- and we can always use more cakes and soups, which count towards MIC's fundraising goals.  Email J.R. White to volunteer or for more information.  Volunteering is a lot of fun, so come join us!

The Mommy & Me Teas will be held on Sunday, December 7th at noon and 2:30pm. Children and their mothers, aunts, grandmothers and special friends enjoy a light lunch served by their favorite Princesses!  Tables seat 4, 6 or 8 and range from $40 to $80. Reservations are required; call 770 819-3265.
