missionMission365 Updates: Service Days with VA Community Living Center and Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service & Education Center

On
July 13 Global Citizen and Philadelphia Youth in Service will partner to play table games with veterans at the VA Community Living Center.  From July 22 to July 26, Mission365, PVMSEC and Philadelphia Youth in Service will create a new mural for the Multi-Service Center. This mural will remember fallen veterans, inspire peace and make the space more welcoming to the veterans serviced at the center. The Philadelphia Youth in Service Program connects adjudicated young people with service opportunities, allowing them to uncover how they may create positive change in their communities through civic participation.

MLK365 July, 2013 Newsletter

Greetings!

As we celebrate American Independence and the power of citizen engagement, MLK365 offers a series of civic and service opportunities this month.

On Saturday, July 13, we continue our partnership with the Philadelphia chapter of the AFL-CIO and the Philly Rising Collaborative for another Summer Crush Clean-Up.

Join us on Tuesday, July 23 in Camden, New Jersey for our MLK365 & Neighbors in Action Community Leadership WorkshopThat same afternoon, you are invited to attend A National Conversation on American Unity at the National Constitution Center where I will participate on a panel on public service with elected officials and civic engagement leaders from around the nation.

On July 30, we will hold our 5th Annual MLK365 Beer Summit: A Continuing Conversation on Race Relations at the Reading Terminal Market. One need only take a snap shop of recent news-- US Supreme Court striking down Section 4 of the 1965 Civil Rights Act, revelations about Paula Deen, and the trial of George Zimmerman-- to realize the pressing need for better understanding how race continues to affect our nation and the need to take action to bridge this divide.

Also this month, as part of our Mission365 program to connect the military and civilian sectors, we are providing young people with opportunities to serve local veterans. Read more about this in our Mission365 Update.

Five years ago this July 30, in the aftermath of the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates on the front porch of his own home by Cambridge Police Sergeant James Crowley, President Obama invited the two men to the White House for a meeting over beer to discuss the incident.

At the same time in Philadelphia,  MLK365 organized a Beer Summit in Center City for concerned citizens to meet, mingle, and discuss race relations in our city and throughout America.

On Tuesday, July 30 we will continue our discussion about race, class and power and how we all can overcome the barriers that threaten to divide us. Beer, soft drinks and snacks will be offered during the event. On-street parking will be available, along with the parking garage at 12th & Filbert Streets. To RSVP, Click HereAny questions - mlk365@globalcitizen365.org.
