Emily Pence, a Music Eduction PhD student, will have a research article published in the
scholarly journal
, Research Perspectives in Music Education (RPME). The RPME is a peer-reviewed research journal that promotes all areas of research in music education. The research is titled: Rapid Success in Beginning Performing Arts Teachers: A Pilot Study. Emily's research was supervised by
Dr. Mark Waymire, Assistant Professor of Music Education.
Two students of
Dr. Jackie McIlwain placed in the MMTA solo competitions held last weekend: Alexis Fong won first place in the Graduate Solo Division and Michael Hayden won second place in the Undergraduate Solo Division.
On February 21st,
Dr. Jackie McIlwain hosted the annual Southern Miss Clarinet Day. The guest artist was Frank Kowalsky, recently retired Professor of Clarinet at Florida State University, who taught a master class, reed workshop, and performed an inspirational recital. The event attracted clarinetists from around the region. Every member of the Southern Miss Clarinet Studio performed at the event, either in a master class, chamber work, or in the Southern Miss Clarinet Choir. Those who performed in Dr. Kowalsky's master class include
Michael Hayden, Mike Gruetzner, Mike Sanchez, and
Garrick Pitts.
Dr. Gregory Fuller, Dr. Webb Parker and
Dr. John Flanery all recently returned from the National American Choral Directors Association Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. All three participated in sessions, attended concerts, and were present for many other activities. Dr. Flanery had one of his pieces in his choral series represented in the Colla Voce Reading Session. They all attended two performances by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as well.
The Spirit of Southern recently performed at The Claiborne Retirement Community in Hattiesburg. The guys were featured on an afternoon program for many of the residents.
Mr. Lawrence Panella recorded this past summer with the Mike Waldrop Big Band for his new CD project on Origin records. The album entitled "Time Within Itself" is a compilation of originals composed by Dr. Michael Waldrop of the University of Eastern Washington and arranged by Dr. Jack Cooper of the University of Memphis. The album is now available
here, on iTunes, on CD Baby, as well as the Origin Records website.
Karis Tucker has been accepted to Cincinnati Conservatory of Music Opera Studio for summer of 2015. She is a student of Dr. Maryann Kyle.
Grace Claire Cordes has been cast as Susannah in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Operafestival di Roma summer apprentice program for the summer of 2015. She is a student of Dr. Maryann Kyle.

The Southern Miss Bassoon Studio was thrilled to welcome bassoonist Matthew Morris (Ohio University) to campus on Tuesday, March 3rd. He gave a master class for bassoon students and performed as part of the Athenia Chamber Ensemble with fellow faculty members,
Alison Brown Sincoff, flute, and
Michele Fiala, oboe.
During the first week in March, Dr. Machado taught and performed in Kansas at Pittsburg State University's String Madness Workshop with students from Brazil, El Salvador, and Honduras.
