WaylandCares Middle School Youth Leadership
Wednesdays, 1:15 - 2:00
At the Middle School

WaylandCares is forming a new Middle School Youth Leadership program to offer students the opportunity to celebrate making healthy decisions to abstain from alcohol, tobacco and other drug use as minors. In addition to substance use prevention, the Youth Leadership group is focused on community service, community awareness and providing opportunities for your child to be a leader within the community.

Wayland Middle School staff member Elsie Cerrone will advise the Youth Leadership Group with support from Jason Verhoosky, Director of WaylandCares. Meetings will be held on Wednesdays directly after school for 45 minutes. Each week will be comprised of check-ins, educational resources, leadership and teamwork games and group work on community projects. In addition to weekly meetings, your child may be invited to participate in additional community events or education opportunities.

WaylandCares is a community coalition focused on reducing youth substance use and abuse  in Wayland, Mass. In addition, we focus on the larger topic of helping the community of  Wayland to be the healthiest community it can be. We work towards these goals by utilizing  evidence-based curriculum, MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey Report Data, Educational  Outreach to both youth and parents, and by forming partnerships and supporting other  organizations community wide.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call WaylandCares at 508.358.6825 or

Postural Screening
3/14, 3/15 & 3/16

All students in grades 6, 7, & 8 will be having their annual postural screening during Wellness classes on 3/14, 3/15 and 3/16. For the screening,  boys will need to be shirtless and wear a pair of shorts. Girls will need to wear a pair of shorts with either a bikini top, an open back bathing suit or a halter-top.

Screenings will be performed by a Registered Nurse and will be held in a private area for each student.  Only abnormal screening results will be mailed to the parent/guardian.

As with any state mandated screening,  a child may be excused with a letter provided by the parent or  guardian.  If you elect to excuse your child from postural screening this year, please be sure to send a letter to Nurse Nims no later than March 7th which includes the following information:

1.   Date
2.    Child's First and Last Name
3.  Please note that you are excusing your child from this year's postural screening and please note the name of the physician who performs this screening for your child annually.
