Yellowstone National Park - Summer of FireJuly 14, 1988: U.S. Vice President George H.W. Bush is ordered to evacuate his fishing camp near the boundary of Yellowstone National Park as flames from Yellowstone's "Summer of Fire" (at right) near the camp. Over four months of wildfires, 36 percent of Yellowstone burns.
 
July 14, 2000: A tornado strikes a tourist camp in Pine Lake, Alberta, killing 12 people. While tornadoes are not unheard of on the Canadian prairie, this one struck far north of the usual range of tornadic activity.
 
July 14, 2008: Twenty Russian scientists are evacuated from an Arctic ice floe. Their research into the decline of Arctic ice cover is disrupted when the ice cover declines even faster than expected.
