Sept. 7, 1965: Unity College in Maine is chartered as the first environmentally focused college in the U.S. In the 1990s, the school makes a political statement when it applies for and receives the solar panels installed on the White House roof by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 (at right). The panels become available after they are removed during the Reagan administration in 1986.
Sept. 7, 1972: Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi gives the go-ahead for development of an Indian nuclear weapon. The first successful test occurs two years later.
