July 5, 1972: The U.S. suspends its secret "Operation Popeye" in Southeast Asia. Journalist Jack Anderson had revealed the top-secret operation to attempt cloud-seeding in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam to slow the progress of North Vietnamese troops. The U.S. does not formally admit the existence of the program until 1974.
