Artistic Director's Message

Dear Friends,

This month we embark on our 17th season, one of the most daring and provocative that we have ever created.  My hope is that you'll join us for many of the programs, and also consider purchasing a season subscription. I'll be giving a special concert preview talk on November 6, free for all season ticket holders.  I'd love to have you join.

Our first Sparks of Glory concert of the season takes place on Saturday afternoon, October 11 at the Seattle Art Museum.  The musical works on the program span a broad range of sounds and styles, but they share something essential in common:  the composers responded through their music to forces that transformed their lives and their world.  2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, a conflict that ended the world as many knew it and ushered in a frenzied creative turmoil in all of the arts. SAM's collection includes pioneering works that reflect the radical artistic innovation that emerged in WWI's wake. In this concert-with-commentary, I'll draw on these art works to illustrate how the period's new musical directions responded to the same upheaval. As always, our Sparks of Glory concerts are free to the public.

I very much look forward to seeing you in the weeks ahead.

Sincerely,

Mina

APPLY NOW: David Tonkonogui Memorial Award - Applications Due October 15th!

In 2005, Music of Remembrance established the David Tonkonogui Memorial Award in memory of our beloved friend and inspiring colleague, cellist David Tonkonogui. Through this youth musician's award, we recognize the musical and spiritual values which David Tonkonogui expressed through his music and his life. We welcome the nomination of Seattle-area youth musicians who can demonstrate an interest in performing music related to or inspired by the Holocaust. The honor includes a cash award of $500 to support continuing musical studies, and an invitation to perform at a Music of Remembrance concert.
