Mission Presbytery Purpose Statement
We are Mission Presbytery, serving Christ in the World. In the Reformed Tradition, together we
  • Establish and equip congregations and sessions to carry out their missions;
  • Recruit, receive, ordain, develop, and care for those called to service in the church;

  • Steward our resources faithfully and generously.

We are better together.

If so, contact Charlie Schuler in Rockport who is seeking as many as they can get. Get in  touch with Charlie ASAP at

Presbyter's Ponderings
Happy New Year to the Saints of Mission Presbytery!

I think it's safe to say that we ALL had a "cool" New Year's Day. Some more than others - believe it or not, my youngest decided to go ahead and take part in the Polar Bear Plunge at Mo-Ranch! The Watsons are still recovering from the 23 or so degree weather that day, but kudos to Dick Powell and the Ranch staff for putting on a fun event in spite of the cold.

I've been reflecting on courage - maybe it's gumption, given my daughter's New Year's decision! - and leadership, and hope, and adventure - and a bunch of things as we turn the page into 2018. Which makes me turn once again to probably my favorite theologian, Stanley Hauerwas. (He's a Methodist, but can be forgiven that because he's a Texan!) I was introduced to his book A Community of Character in the mid-80s as a seminarian, and it's still one to which I turn again and again. This quote is worthy of posting on your refrigerator or your bathroom mirror.

BOP Start of Year Checklist
Dear Friends,
I pray that your new year is off to a good start with hope on the horizon!
Attached is the annual Start of Year Checklist for 2018 which details the routine reporting responsibilities of congregational leadership.
Referenced in the Salary Change reporting to the Board of Pensions is a helpful article in the December Employer News which will assist Treasurers/ Authorized Representatives in their efforts.
Also included is a link to the Taxation of Death Benefits Dues Calculator, which will help Treasurers in reporting the imputed value of death benefits as required by the IRS.
Please feel free to share this with the leadership of congregations and other entities within your bounds.
I look forward to serving you and your presbyteries in 2018!
Grace and peace,
Rev. Kevin S. Keaton,

Joys and Concerns
Please keep this family in your prayers:

We have learned of the passing of the Reverend Thomas H. Schmid on December 25, 2017 in Santa Barbara, California.  Rev. Schmid served San Pedro Presbyterian Church for about ten years in the late 70s to late 80s. A memorial service will be held February 2, 2018 at 6:30 PM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Santa Barbara, California.

Condolences may be sent to Rev. Schmid's wife, Beth:
418 W de la Guerra #C
Santa Barbara CA 93101

Plan now to help us say "thank you" to our own Lita Simpson as she retires March 4, from her work as Youth and Young Adult Ministry Director for Mission Presbytery. There will be a dinner in Lita's honor Friday night, March 2, at Westlake Hills church in Austin during the Presbytery meeting. More details to come!

Watch this space next week! Are you  feeling called to work with the awesome young men and women of Mission Presbytery? Do you know someone who would be perfect for the position? We look forward - not to finding "Lita's replacement," but the person who can take our work with youth and young adults to the next level. The position description will be posted here next week, and we will be accepting applications immediately. Please pray for the person that God has already identified for this important ministry!
