Statistics show that there will be 1 million plus medical meetings in the US alone in 2018 and a projected 67% growth in the development of medical devices. Regardless of your current role in this industry, this growth will touch you and your teams in the near future.
I hope you join us this coming Wednesday for an interactive discussion about trends and challenges we, in the meetings industry will face in this ever-changing landscape.
If you’ve joined us at the August and September education meetings you may have seen the
Office of the President
hanging out at the
OOP Table Talk
. For those of you who don’t know what Table Talk is, Richard Carroll (Immediate Past President), Bryan Lavin (President-Elect) and myself (your Office of the President) gather at a table or a location near registration prior to each educational meeting to be available to the membership to discuss hot topics.
As we enter nominations seasons, the hot topic before October’s meeting will be
Board Service
. Richard and I will be present to answer any questions you might have about what board service entails, what the constraints on your time look like, the opportunities available and the rewards to be reaped through service to the chapter. And I would be more than happy to answer any questions about the CMP and CMM programs at that time as well for those beginning their research or those already committed with questions. So please stop by and say hello to Richard and I and ask us your burning questions.
Thank you for being an engaged member of this chapter that I am so honored to lead this year. We aim to enhance and enrich every moment of the precious time you choose to spend with us and look forward to seeing you on the 18

They say, “Change is the Only Constant in Life”, and if you’re a medical meeting planner you would be hard pressed to argue that point. Medical meetings and events make up nearly 25% of all meetings and events. With the faster approvals of more drugs and medical devices, the uncertainty of the effects of political influences, and the ever-evolving compliance and regulatory landscape, the role of the medical meeting planner has never been more visible or more important.
This interactive session will discuss trends and challenges of medical meetings including:
- The Look of future meetings
- Future meeting technologies
- Tools and resources
- Compliance landscape
- Professional opportunities
5:30 - 6:00 pm - Registration
6:00 - 7:30 pm - Reception and Networking
7:30 - 8:30 pm - Education

Healthcare Meetings - What's the Big Deal?
By Carolyn Browning, CMP, CMM

All meetings aren’t created equally. While the ‘basics’ are the same, different types of meetings often require special attention and extra considerations; medical and pharmaceutical meetings certainly fall into that category. Open Payments Act, Transfer of Value, compliance, meal caps, HCPs, CMEs – if you thought you knew all the industry terms, these are just of the few of the many additional ones that medical/pharma professionals need to deal with.
Luckily planners and suppliers don’t have to go it alone – there is plenty of education out there to make sure everyone is kept up to date.
MPI WestField member Mozelle Goodwin, CMP, HMCC,
likes working with suppliers who also have their HMCC - “Planners can be more productive with certified supplier partners since they have had training on the "why" of meal caps and other meeting requirements, which reduces the negotiating time. Some hotels have developed their own "Pharma Menus" to provide pre-selected menus that meet most meal caps in place. I personally request these menus while in the RFP phase as this could be a deterrent for selecting a particular property if they are not up to date on compliant food & beverage for my group.”
MPINE member Patricia Smurro
of Discover Newport said, “Obtaining the HMCC certificate shows my clients that I am aware of the compliance and regulations within their industry. Newport, Rhode Island is a perfect fit for medical and pharma meetings and Discover Newport supports my continuing education on this topic.”
MPINE is assisting with
educational opportunities
for those in this field with this month’s meeting focusing on the future of medical meetings and by offering the HMCC course beforehand. For more information about the HMCC, click

. Starting this year, MPI has also established the MPI-MD Advisory Council to address the needs of members in the healthcare industry.
Carolyn is the Founder & Chief Solution Strategist of MEETing Needs, LLC, based in Stamford, CT.
Carolyn holds both her CMP and CMM and is preparing for her HMCC.

For 3 years, Melanie has been a star volunteer for our Fall Institute. The time and effort that she contributes has a huge impact on the participant experience. As she prepares for this years' Program, I caught up with Melody to get her thoughts on MPI.
Q - How did you first become involved with MPI?
I hadn't started working in the industry yet but was enrolled in a Meeting Management certificate program, and one of the classes was being taught by Beth Hamiroune (Past President, MPINE). She introduced me to MPI and to my future boss, Julie McConchie (I believe she also was a past president). I went to a few meetings but didn't get active in MPI until I moved to CA.
When I moved across the country, I didn't have much of a network. I immediately got involved with the local chapter and found a wonderful resource of colleagues and friends. MPI is a great community and has been an important part of my network whenever/wherever I moved. And what they tell you is true: the more you put in and get involved, the greater/more valuable the experience.
Q - Can you share one of your most memorable MPINE stories?
I think coming back to New England and rejoining this chapter has really been a homecoming. I saw many familiar faces at my first meeting and received many warm greetings, welcoming me back, which was really nice.
Working on last year's Fall Institute here in Newport (my new-ish home town) was a great opportunity to get back involved with the chapter and to meet many local colleagues (Newport & Rhode Island). I appreciated the experience for a lot of reasons.
