Missed the Event?
Here's the October Event Recap!

If you didn't make it out to Brookline on October 25th, you missed a great night of education and networking!

Security expert Mark Herrera held the riveted attention of a robust group of planners and suppliers at the Holiday Inn of Brookline as he talked about situational awareness, how to think about event security and plan for the unexpected.

Mr. Herrera, who has trained over 3,000 airline pilots for the Department of Homeland Security, talked about the cues to look for in being aware of our environment and how to train ourselves to recognize the unusual. He encouraged us to actively think about what types of activities could disrupt our events and to plan three ways to counter that activity.

He encouraged us to raise the issue of venue and event security with our management teams and have a policy in place.

More great education is coming in November- we hope to see you at the Educational Institute on November 21st and 22nd at the Hotel Viking in Newport, Rhode Island!

November Member Profile

This month we get to know Anne Roberts, Destination Expert for Discover Newport!

Can you tell us about your background?  How did you get involved with Discover Newport?

Being born and raised in Newport, RI, I would never think of living or working anywhere else. When the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to represent my hometown as a first class destination for meetings and events.

How did you become interested in MPI?  Can you share a memorable experience?

When I took on a role in the Sales Department at Discover Newport, my manager at the time strongly suggested that I join MPI/NE and sit on a committee. It was great advice. I chose Education as the committee to sit on, first as a monthly program co- chair, then as head of the committee. A couple of years later, I joined the BOD as Director of Education, subsequently serving as VP of Education.  As a member of the MPI/NE Community, there have been many memorable experiences. Colleagues have become friends, friends have become clients. There is a sense of loyalty among MPI/NE that is unyielding.

The MPINE Fall Institute is being held at the Hotel Viking in Newport this year- what would you like the membership to know about the features and benefits of Newport as a meeting and event destination?

Upon arrival, attendees coming to the MPI/NE Educational Institute will immediately feel the warmth and charm that our city exemplifies. The Hotel Viking is a great representation of one of our convention properties. Just steps away from The Hotel Viking, visitors can experience Cliff Walk, The International Tennis Hall of Fame, the famous Newport Mansions, and our vibrant waterfront. Each visitor, whether for leisure or business, should make Discover Newport their first point of contact. Our unsurpassed services are completely complimentary to meeting planners.

What are some of the things that visitors to Newport should put on their to-do lists for the Fall and Winter?

Newport is host to many fun events in the Fall and Winter. Our famed Newport Mansions, aka Summer Cottages, host a Food & Wine Festival each September. Each October right after Columbus Day, Bowen’s Wharf has the popular Seafood Festival. Late November begins the long traditional Christmas in Newport, where events are held through the New Year. February brings our famous Winter Fest, the largest outdoor winter festival in New England. If you’re still in need of things to do, bundle up and skate at The Newport Skating Rink or stroll our world famous Cliff Walk, noted in National Geographic as one of one hundred things to do before you die.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?  What do you like to do in your free time?

At the risk of sounding cliché, I do love spending time with my family. I am completely unbiased when I say, I have the three most adorable grandchildren on the planet. When I’m not hanging with them, I like to play racquetball with my very competitive colleagues, experiment with new recipes and go for long walks. Newport is the perfect place to call home.
Success Story — Hire MPI
Richard Carroll
Ainsley Onstott

Many of our members have success stories to share, so we thought it would be inspiring to feature one each month.  For November, two of our longtime members have just announced that they will be working together!

Ainsley Onstott will be joining Richard Carroll on the sales team at the Chatham Bars Inn Resort & Spa (CBI) and they tell us how it all came together.

MPI/NE: Please tell us a little about yourselves and your professional backgrounds.

AO: Growing up in Wellesley, I have always loved the Boston area.  After four years living in St. Louis, MO, I could not wait to be back in New England.  I started my career with Conventures, Inc. and Sail Boston 2009, followed by a few years with the American Heart Association, and most recently almost five years at the Museum of Science.  I love to travel, ski, hike, and spend time with my friends and family at the beach!
RC: I have spent 25 years in the hospitality industry, with a background in Sales & Marketing for the last 20 years.  I grew up in the Starwood Brands in the 90’s (yes the 90’s) and went to work for independent hotels in 2004.  I am currently the Director of Sales & Marketing for CBI and Harbourtowne St. Michaels in Maryland.  I have been married for 20 years and have 2 wonderful kids: Kayla, 16 and Kelley, 14.  I live in Plymouth, MA and grew up in Arlington, MA.

MPI/NE: Why did each of you first join MPI?

AO: When I moved back to Boston after college, I was looking for ways to get more involved in the industry and make some local professional connections.  A family friend (who then became the chapter president) was involved in MPI New England at that time, so I chose to start there!
RC: To make connections, find business relationships and make money for my employer!

MPI/NE: How did you first meet one another?

AO: A year or two after I first joined MPI, I was recommended to join a committee.  I chose Special Events, as this seemed like the most logical place to start with my background.  Richard was the VP of Special Projects at the time, leading the group.
RC: On the Special Events Committee!  I was VP of Special Projects and Ainsley was a chair of the Special Events committee.

MPI/NEHow did the conversation start about working together at CBI?

AO: After almost five years in my former role at the Museum, I was looking for opportunities for growth in the industry.  As a mentor of mine, Richard and I had multiple conversations about my career and his recommendations on what my next steps should be moving forward.  A few weeks later, he called me to talk with me about an opportunity to join his team!
RC: CBI had a Group Sales position open and we were taking our time to find the right fit- it didn’t matter how long it took.  I was at the MPI meeting in September chatting with Ainsley- we had a good conversation and on my drive home it hit me.  I’ve always admired her intelligence, drive, commitment to the chapter and maturity.  We’d known each other for years and we’ve been on the board together for a few years.  I have tremendous trust and faith in all of her abilities.  Why wouldn’t I explore the opportunity to have her join our team?

MPI/NE: What are you looking forward to most about working together?

AO: Richard and his team at the Chatham Bars Inn have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry.  When I went in to interview, I had great conversations and met an amazing group of people who truly love what they do and have fun doing it.  I am very excited to grow my career with CBI while expanding the network at the resort!
RC: Success, balance and fun! In life you may only cross paths with a few exceptional individuals.  I encourage you all to look up from your phones and see if one is standing right in front of you.

Join the MPI/NE Board of Directors!

Share your ideas and help plan our path for the future!

Calling all leaders!  Have you ever felt that you had some great ideas that you’d like to share with our chapter?  Have you ever thought of an educational topic that we haven’t yet explored?  Are you looking to grow personally or professionally and expand your network?  If you answered “yes” to any of these questions and are an active member of our MPI/NE Chapter, please consider this my personal invitation to apply to our Board of Directors for 2017-2018!

We are looking for strong candidates with invaluable leadership skills just like YOU to help us grow our premier meeting and event industry association.  Please be sure to go to the "Our Chapter" tab on the MPI/NE website for the 2017-2018 Board Application and click HERE for a list of our current Board descriptions.  If you have any questions regarding the application process, please feel free to reach out to me directly at susan.m.prue@gmail.com - applications are due Monday, November 28th

Looking forward to receiving your application!
