Fall has officially begun, the leaves are turning red and gold and the kids are back in school, which means it's time to register for the 2016 MPI New England Educational Institute & After Dark!  This year's event will take place on November 21st and 22nd at the beautiful and newly renovated Hotel Viking in Newport, Rhode Island.

This month's featured member is Laura Caruso, CMP, Manager of Surgeon Education for Davol, a division of C.R. Bard

What is your background and how did you get into your current role as a planner?

I attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI with the intention of being a travel agent as I’ve always enjoyed traveling and seeing the world. During my sophomore year, my advisor recommended meeting planning as my bachelor’s degree. When he described the role to me, it sounded really fun with opportunities to travel – I was in! I graduated in 2000 with my B.S. in Hospitality Sales & Meeting Management and have been in the industry for 15 years.
 
Why did you decide to join MPINE?  Do have any success stories with other members?
               
MPI was recommended to me by my former manager during my first meeting planner job in 2002. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many great people and have learned so many things about the industry. MPI has enabled me to develop friendships with experts in their field who are happy to share their experiences openly and honestly.
 
What types and sizes of events do you plan most often?  Do you hold most of your events regionally and do you have any special events coming up?

For the first 14 years of my career, I was a meeting planner and then manager of teams who handled all of the logistics and communications for many types of programs including national sales meetings, surgeon education programs, incentive trips, and advisory boards. Most of our programs ranged from 20 to 1,100 people nationally. In 2015, I decided to take on a new challenge and joined Davol as their Manager of Surgeon Education. In this role, our team works with our key surgeon speakers to develop and execute hundreds of dinner programs and multi-day symposiums each year.
 
What changes have you noticed in your industry and how has this affected the type and style of events you plan?

In medical device, our ongoing challenge is to ensure that we  work with hotels and restaurants to establish compliant pricing for meals and sleeping rooms. This has been and will continue to be a challenge in our industry because meal and sleeping room limits for different medical/pharma companies often do not represent fair market value. With that said, we have great partners in the industry who do that best they can to work with us and meet our needs.
 
What are some hobbies and interests you enjoy outside of work?

My husband John and I enjoy spending the majority of our time with our 9 ½ year old twin girls, Ava & Sophia.  Kids at this age are so much fun and have a great sense of humor, so we are always entertained! Our favorite past time is boating with friends and family during the summer and going on vacation in the winter to escape the cold.
