Karim Nagi & Sharq Arab Ensemble present Arabiqa!

Last Tuesday we welcomed Egyptian-American Karim Nagi and members of the Sharq Arab Music Ensemble, who entertained students with their presentation "Arabiqa."  Karim and his friends introduced us to Arab and Muslim culture in a high-energy performance featuring exciting traditional dances and soulful folk music played on a variety of traditional instruments. They used authentic costumes, maps, Arabic language, humor, and had lots of audience participation as they enlightened us about a captivating world beyond the headlines.

Thank you to our PTO Cultural Enrichment committee for bringing this delightful ensemble to our school!

WaylandCares Middle School Youth Leadership
Wednesdays, 1:15 -  2:15 at the Middle School

WaylandCares  a Middle School Youth Leadership program is back!!! We offer students the opportunity to celebrate making healthy decisions to abstain from alcohol, tobacco and other drug use as minors. In addition to substance use prevention, the Youth Leadership group is focused on community service, community awareness and providing opportunities for your child to be a leader within the community.

Such activities include learning about various ways to help others in our community, and surrounding communities. For example, organizing a drive to collect sample sized personal care items for Voices Against Violence/SMOC, volunteering or running with a family member to support Pam’s Run or attending an MIAA Youth Leadership Conference to name a few.  Students should feel free to come join a meeting to see what we are all about and get involved where their interests lie.

Wayland Middle School staff member Elsie Cerrone will advise the Youth Leadership Group with support from Jason Verhoosky, Director of WaylandCares. Meetings will be held on Wednesdays directly after school for an hour.  Each week will be comprised of check-ins, educational resources, leadership and teamwork games and group work on community projects. In addition to weekly meetings, your child may be invited to participate in additional community events or education opportunities.

WaylandCares is a community coalition focused on reducing youth substance use and abuse  in Wayland, Mass. In addition, we focus on the larger topic of helping the community of  Wayland to be the healthiest community it can be. We work towards these goals by utilizing  evidence-based curriculum, MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey Report Data, Educational  Outreach to both youth and parents, and by forming partnerships and supporting other organizations community wide.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call WaylandCares at 508.358.6825 or, or Elsie Cerrone at
