A Message from Assistant Principal Benzie

Good morning,

The Wayland Middle School community enjoyed two wonderful celebrations this past Friday: our Martin Luther King, Jr. Assemblies and our 29th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration.

The assemblies were a meaningful way to celebrate and commemorate Dr. King. The students spoke eloquently and performed magnificently. We had student speakers on activists, a special student performance of song and playing the piano, two art tributes and performances by the select chorus, chamber orchestra and jazz band. After the assembly, the 8th grade continued on with activities and guest speakers. The 8th grade, preparing for their trip to Washington D.C., was able to dedicate the entire day towards the theme of activism seeing a performance of a trial about a Japanese internment camp. After lunch, the 8th graders boarded buses to each of the elementary schools in town. A heartfelt thank you to Mr. Lee, Dr. Harvey and Mr. Jones for opening up their schools. Our students had a fantastic time hanging out and reading with the younger students.

Later Friday evening, the Boston METCO Parent Council sponsored a fantastic night of celebration, “Honoring Our History.” A delicious dinner was served, followed by performances by our students.

It was truly a special day for the Wayland Middle School community!

Warm regards,

This week's Artists of the Week represent students whose works were shared during  Friday's  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. Both Katherine and Sophia shared their works during the ceremony, and Elizabeth's drawing

Above the Influence
WaylandCares at WMS Lunches this week
Tuesday, January 24th

WaylandCares will be bringing a town wide Above the Influence campaign to WMS. WaylandCares and our middle school youth leadership group will be hosting a table during the lunch blocks on Tuesday, Jan. 24th, in the cafeteria. Students are welcome to fill out a quote bubble and share what keeps them "above the influence" and making healthy decisions. Free "You have better things to do than drugs" bracelets will be available.

Volunteers Needed!

We love our WMS teachers, and to show them just how much we appreciate them, the PTO hosts three Teacher Appreciation events throughout the year – a September back-to-school lunch, a May luncheon, and a June breakfast.  We are looking for a team of parents to coordinate the May luncheon, as well as parents to help run the June breakfast.

We hope that you have been able to join us for a Middle & More parent coffee this year.  They are a wonderful, informal way to get to know WMS better, including our teachers and staff.  We are looking for a few parent volunteers to help with set-up, greeting and clean-up for the remainder of this year’s coffees.  The entire schedule can be found, below, in Upcoming Events.

Please email Amy Simmons at for more information on any of these volunteer opportunities.

Save the Date!
The PTO is excited to announce that we will be sponsoring a screening and discussion of Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age on Thursday, March 30, at 7:00 pm.  “SCREENAGERS probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director’s own, and depicts messy struggles, over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction.  Through surprising insights from authors and brain scientists solutions emerge on how we can empower kids to best navigate the digital world.”

Screenagers has been featured in the press on Good Morning America, the Today Show, and NPR, as well as in The New York TimesThe Washington Post, Forbes and more.  View the trailer, and mark your calendars for this event – you won’t want to miss it!
