A Message from Principal Gavron

I hope you will consider joining us at the 29th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration  on Friday night,  January 20th at Wayland Middle School. A delicious dinner will be served between  6 - 7 PM followed by a a program in the theater from  7 - 8:15 PM.  The program will feature K-12 student performers who pay tribute to Dr. King's legacy. The price can't be beat at only $8 per person. It is always one of my absolute favorite nights of the year.

The evening's events will piggyback on the middle school's annual in-school MLK Celebration.  There 8th graders will offer candle light tributes and musical offerings to our student community along with poetry readings and art displays to honor King's life work.  Our 8th graders will spend the afternoon engaging in service activities to celebrate King's legacy, with the majority of students volunteering in classrooms throughout the elementary schools. It is sure to be a special day throughout the district.

Volunteers Needed!

We love our WMS teachers, and to show them just how much we appreciate them, the PTO hosts three Teacher Appreciation events throughout the year – a September back-to-school lunch, a May luncheon, and a June breakfast.  We are looking for a team of parents to coordinate the May luncheon, as well as parents to help run the June breakfast.

We hope that you have been able to join us for a Middle & More parent coffee this year.  They are a wonderful, informal way to get to know WMS better, including our teachers and staff.  We are looking for a few parent volunteers to help with set-up, greeting and clean-up for the remainder of this year’s coffees.  The entire schedule can be found, below, in Upcoming Events.

Please email Amy Simmons at simmons221@comcast.net for more information on any of these volunteer opportunities.

Middle & More Coffee
Please join us on Friday, February 10th, from 8:45-9:45 in the Middle School Library for our next Middle & More Coffee on English, Social Studies and Applied Sciences at WMS.  We will be joined by department heads and Ms. Gavron for an overview of the curriculum in these departments, including plenty of time for parent Q & A. Please contact Amy Simmons (simmons221@comcast.net) if you have any questions.  You can find the entire year’s schedule of parent coffees at: http://waylandpto.org/middle-school-pto/middle-and-more-coffees/.

Save the Date!
The PTO is excited to announce that we will be sponsoring a screening and discussion of Screenagers: Growing up in the Digital Age on Thursday, March 30, at 7:00 pm.  “SCREENAGERS probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director’s own, and depicts messy struggles, over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction.  Through surprising insights from authors and brain scientists solutions emerge on how we can empower kids to best navigate the digital world.”

Screenagers has been featured in the press on Good Morning America, the Today Show, and NPR, as well as in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Forbes and more.  View the trailer, and mark your calendars for this event – you won’t want to miss it!
